Volvik staff player Chella Choi finished 2nd at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open on the LPGA Tour Sunday in her quest for her first LPGA Tour victory. Choi now has a streak of 10 straight Top 25 finishes on the LPGA Tour. She set a course record on Saturday, firing a 62 and vaulting her to the lead after starting the day T38th. The 62 was a career low for Choi. The runner up finish was the third of her career.
“I work with my father again so it’s 50 percent ok right,” said Choi. “It’s so close, close every tournament so it’s a very good experience for me. My shots and my putting is much better and yesterday 10-under is my best score so it’s a really good memory in here.”
Choi has quickly become one of the top players on the LPGA Tour and she continues to climb the ranks on the Rolex Rankings. She has been a model of consistency while playing her trademark Orange Volvik golf ball. Her three Top 5’s, seven Top 10’s and 17 Top 25’s in 2013 led her to a career best $739,441 in 2013, ranking her 17th on the final LPGA Tour money list. She currently ranks 4th on the money list with $130,111 earned after only two events.
“We are very fortunate to have such a class act like Chella on our team,” said Volvik USA President Don Shin. “She is one of the best people to be around, always smiling and learning from her experiences. Her big moment in the sun is coming soon.”
Choi’s father serves as her caddy and the two have made a made a pact to stay together until Choi claims her first LPGA Tour victory.
The runner up finish by Choi and Top 15 finish in Australia by Volvik staffer Mi Hyang Lee has Volvik off to a torrid start in their quest to surpass their phenomenal 2013 LPGA Tour success. In 2013, Volvik staff players experienced one win, 13 Top 5 finishes, 22 Top 10 finishes and 48 total Top 25 finishes. Volvik has already experienced two Top 5’s and four Top 15 finishes after two events on the 2014 LPGA Tour. Choi and Pornanong Phatlum both rank within the Top 10 on the 2014 money list. Mi Hyang Lee, a recent winner on the Ladies European Tour, ranks 19th and Thidapa Suwannapura, also a recent winner on the LET, ranks 21st on the money list. Last year, three Volvik staff players finished in the Top 25 on the money list.
“I think it is fair to say that Volvik has been on fire for the past few months,” said National Director of Sales and Marketing Jon Claffey. “From all the success we had on LPGA in 2013, to winning three straight events on the LET from December to February, to all of the exposure we received from the Volvik Ladies Masters where Cheyenne won our event to Chella receiving an amazing amount of TV time and coverage for her course record and runner up finish, we have had an amazing run of international exposure. The number of golfers that are aware of our brand and all the great things we are up to keeps growing and growing.”
Volvik recently announced that ten LPGA Tour players are playing their golf balls in 2014 and that they have also signed Tim Petrovic on the PGA TOUR and Web.com Tour and Hall of Famer Larry Nelson on the Champions Tour to staff deals.
