Thanks to advancements in technology, golf’s most imaginary course, the world famous “Infamous 18 Holes” created 30+ years ago by golfer/artist Loyal H. (Bud) Chapman are now available in art collector quality prints.
After Chapman painted the “Infamous 18 Holes” during 1975-1982, they were available for purchase as art print posters, which were produced by the four-color separation printing process used in the 1980s. While this method was able to come close to duplicating the originals, it could not actually duplicate the originals.
“The Gicleé printing process has been able to produce true replicas of the original paintings,” said Vlad Gribovsky of TPK Golf. “The difference in color, brightness and shading (and how that affects depth perception) is amazing. Bud’s works were never sold as collectibles, but that is changing as production has started on 5,000 sets that will be numbered and signed by Bud in the next six months. This is the only edition that will ever be produced, making them true collectibles that will likely appreciate greatly in value.”
The Gicleé prints will be the same size (22.5″W X 29.5″H image/26″ X 33.5″ board) as the original paintings and will be on archival paper. “Being the same size is not a normal practice, so these will be like owning one of the original paintings,” Gribovsky added.
Gribovsky indicated that 500 full set of “Infamous 18 Holes” Artist’s Proofs, numbered 1-500, will be offered for $54,000. Full sets of prints numbered 501 to 5,000 will sell for $45,000. In addition, some of the sets will be set aside so that individual prints can be sold at $3,500 for Artist’s Proofs and $3,000 for regular edition.
“After setting up the printing operations, including doing color corrections, etc., we printed a 10 set of Artist’s Proofs that have been signed and numbered by Bud, who also drew a Remarque on each print,” said Gribovsky. “Nine of them, numbered 1-9, are still available for $63,000 each on a first come first served basis by contacting me directly on my cell phone at 1-612-229-7502.”

About the Artist
Loyal H. “Bud” Chapman’s lust for life is reflected in his painting, which deftly combines his love for golf with love of our earth’s varied beauty. A native of Minnesota, Chapman, 91, began painting at an early age and played his first round of golf as a caddie at the age of 12 at Interlachen Country Club, the site where Bobby Jones finalized his grand slam. During World War II, Chapman flew B-29s and created a comic strip called “Willie Washout”. After his discharge from the service, he attended Walker Art School in Minneapolis, and later opened his own art studio, starting his career as a commercial artist. In 1972 he started and completed his first golf painting, Victoria Falls Golf Club. Seventeen more holes followed over the next 10 years that were to be the 18 Infamous Holes. To climax and complete the series, he created the 19th Infamous Hole Golf Course. The imaginary holes first appeared in Golf Digest Magazine and later were featured internationally in Reader’s Digest Magazine. They have appeared and been featured on numerous television talk shows and have been distributed throughout the world. Famed golf course architect Pete Dye noted,” Bud’s innovative thinking certainly influenced many designers to make contours a little steeper and the bunkers a little deeper and generally to think outside the box with news designs, and, in that way Bud made a great contribution to the game.” As a scratch golfer, he has been a perennial champion as his own club, won several state tournaments and has participated in many USGA national amateur events. He regularly accomplishes the feat of bettering his age even today. He holds a pilot license and is always seeking out adventure, whether it’s fishing, hunting or searching for buried treasure.
