Hosted by San Jose State University men’s golf at Pasatiempo GC
Santa Cruz, CA – While tour players are vying for the famed “green jacket” this weekend at the Masters tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, top collegiate players will be competing for the coveted “blue jacket” at the 68th annual Transamerica-World Financial Group Western Intercollegiate Championship at Pasatiempo Golf Club, another historic Alister MacKenzie-designed course (Santa Cruz, CA).
Set for April 12-13, this championship is one of the longest-running men’s collegiate competitions in the country and according to Tournament Director John Kennaday, San José State University’s men’s golf coach, five of the 14 teams competing in the championship are ranked in the nation’s top-20 by GolfStat. The field includes California (#3), Stanford (#4), Texas (#12), Washington (#17), and USC (#22). In addition to host San Jose State, SMU, Arizona State, Hawaii, Memphis, Oregon, San Diego State, UC Irvine, and UTEP will round out the field.
The tournament will include standout amateur players from USA, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines, Germany and Finland playing 36 holes on April 12, and an additional 18 on April 13 with plans to crown a medalist and convey the “blue jacket” to the winner.
The 2014 championship will be played in memory of World Golf Hall of Famer Mr. Ken Venturi, WI champion in ’51 and ’53, who was a longtime supporter of the tournament and San Jose University’s men’s golf program.
The tournament is open to the general public and golf enthusiasts are welcome to join the gallery free of charge. Free parking on a first-come, first-served basis is available at Pasatiempo GC.
