ORLANDO, Fla. (April 16, 2014) – Following the March 21 release of its annual rankings of America’s top modern and classic courses, Golfweek continues its celebration of great golf architecture in the April 18 issue with the unveiling of the 2014 Golfweek’s Best Canadian Courses list. Recognizing perennial favorites and must-play newcomers from both the classic and modern eras, this year’s list will serve as a go-to guide for both golf architecture fans and travelers when the greatest courses of The Great White North begin their spring season later this month.
“I wish more Americans went north to experience the rugged, naturalistic quality of Canadian courses,” said Bradley S. Klein, national director of Golfweek’s Best Courses rating program. “And it’s not just due to a Golden Age genius like Stanley Thompson, who has the top three courses on our Classic list: No. 1 The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Golf Club (Jasper, Alberta), No. 2 St. George’s Golf and Country Club (Islington, Ontario) and No. 3 The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course (Banff, Alberta).
“With Cabot Links (Inverness, Nova Scotia) as the new No. 1 on the Modern list, Rod Whitman now has three courses in the top 21, including No. 5 Sagebrush Golf & Sporting Club (Quilchena, British Columbia), which Whitman co-designed with Richard Zokol and Armen Suny, and No. 21 Blackhawk Golf Course (Nisku, Alberta).”
To produce Golfweek’s Best Courses lists, an expert team of more than 725 course raters uses a 10-point ranking system to identify the best layouts from two distinctly different eras: pre-1960 and 1960-present. The exclusive system recognizes that before 1960 – the year that separates Classic from Modern – most course designers relied on native contours for course features. Since 1960, as the game became more popular, designers began to utilize high-tech engineering and advanced mechanical means to transform the landscape to suit their designs.
