MONTEREY, Calif. (May 29, 2014) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group® (CIG), the Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) swings into the 2014 Summer Series featuring a talented showcase of boys and girls who are making headlines both regionally and nationally.
Two of the top girls from the recently completed JTNC Spring Series have qualified to play in the U.S. Women’s Open, with 11-year-old Lucy Li of Redwood Shores making history as the youngest player to make it through section qualifying. Li and Kathleen Scavo of Napa, as well as recent JTNC alum Paige Lee of Folsom, all advanced to the national championship, to be played June 19-22 in Pinehurst, N.C. Li was medalist at the sectional in Half Moon Bay, with Scavo second and Lee third.
“As the Title Sponsor of the Northern California Junior Tour, CIG wishes the girls the best as they compete at this year’s U.S. Women’s Open,” said Peter Cazzolla, President and CEO of Capital Insurance Group. “They are excellent representatives of our tour and illustrate the high level of competition and character we have seen in the young golfers during our past four years with the JTNC.”
The boys from the JTNC have not done too badly, either. Will Brueckner of Walnut Creek won the Northern California High School Championship, with JTNC competitors Joshua McCarthy of Danville second and Justin Suh of San Jose third. Overall, seven of the nine NorCal qualifiers to play in the California State Championship on June 2 are from the JTNC. Also impressive was Ryan Gronlund of Pleasanton, who advanced through Local Qualifying for the U.S. Open.
State competitors were at the top of the final JTNC boy’s event in the Spring Series VIII at Roddy Ranch GC in Antioch, where Pleasanton’s Ryan Knop won a three-way playoff with Hayden Hui of Dublin and Mikey Slesinki of Fremont to win the Boys Championship title. Knop helped Foothill High win the NCGA/CIF Northern California title, while Hui plays at Dublin High, which also advanced. All three shot even-par 144 for the tournament, with Hui closing with a remarkable bogey-free 65 that included an eagle on the par-5 18th to get into the playoff.
In the Girls Championship at Roddy Ranch, Yealimi Noh of Concord shot 3-under 141 to win the title.
Now one of the best regional tours in the country, the JTNC provides the young athletes a wealth of tournament experience, while they in turn exemplify the CIG’s healthy lifestyle initiative that goes with walking 18 holes each tournament day.
The JTNC begins its 2014 Summer Series with a two-day competition June 7-8 at Elkhorn CC in Stockton, with six tournaments taking the tour to some of the top golf venues in the region: June 17-18 at Poppy Ridge GC in Livermore, June 23-24 at El Macero CC Davis, July 15-16 at Coyote Creek GC in San Jose and July 29-30 at Sevillano Links in Corning. The JTNC concludes the 2013-2014 campaign with its Tour Championship Aug. 7-8 at the new Poppy Hills GC in Pebble Beach.
Each JTNC tournament is 36 holes, played over two days, and features competition for boys and girls ages 18 and younger who have not started college. To qualify for the Boys Championship level, players must have a handicap index of 4.0 or lower, while Girls Championship players are required to have a handicap index of 6.0 or lower.
Championship Flight winners are recognized with American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) performance stars and results from JTNC tournaments are sent to the Junior Golf Scoreboard for national rankings.
Later this year the JTNC will resume with its Fall Series, running from Aug. 16 through Oct. 26. Two Holiday Series events have been added to the 2014 calendar, Nov. 24-25 at Del Monte GC in Monterey, and Dec. 29-30 at Poppy Hills GC in Pebble Beach.
