Braintree, Mass. – Keeping one’s cool is a proven prescription for better golf scores, but when it comes to getting the coolest possible experience out of a golf getaway, there’s one surefire method: Just add water.
Now on newsstands, the July-August 2014 edition of GolfGetaways Magazine does just that – seeking out and exploring some of America’s best addresses for enjoying the game in its most natural habitat, as in near a large body of H20.
“Golf took root on Scottish linksland and still remains a seaside animal to its core,” says Executive Editor Vic Williams. “And though you can now find world-class courses in every possible geographical setting, there’s something special about teeing it up with an ocean, gulf or lake in view. It gets the golf nut’s juices flowing like no other, whether we’re talking the Southern California coast, Southeast low country or a huge inland lake.”
The issue’s waterfront journey begins at Reynolds Plantation in northern Georgia, a multi-course feast of golf and stellar accommodations along sprawling Lake Oconee. That’s where Managing Editor Darin Bunch and photographer Brian Oar spent several colorful days this spring and came away with a story of Southern hospitality at the resort’s Ritz-Carlton Lodge, big-name course architecture – Nicklaus, Engh, Fazio, Jones, Cupp – and watersports from swimming to boating to fishing.
From there it’s on to Pelican Hill in Orange County, Calif., with its two solid Tom Fazio layouts and sweeping Pacific views; northeastern Florida’s lovely Amelia Island; the Monterey Peninsula’s rejuvenated Poppy Hills; South Florida’s Seagate Resort and recently acquired course, formerly a private track; and North Carolina’s wild and wonderful Outer Banks, where a surprising variety of courses await aside seafood joints, miles of beach and the National Wright Brothers Memorial. Finally, Williams heads for Montego Bay to take part in the Jamaica Invitational Pro-Am, the Caribbean’s best all-inclusive golf tournament-slash-bash.
Other highlights: A “Dream” visit to Indian Wells in the California desert; a first look at the new Lodge at Tetherow in Central Oregon; soaking up some Florida sun with Salamander Resorts; hanging out along Alabama’s Gulf Shore; a pre-Open Championship look at Hoylake and Royal Liverpool; and quick stops in Cabo, Justin Timberlake’s Mirimichi in Tennessee, NorCal’s fiery-but-fun Dragon and Louisiana’s Audubon Trail.
