One of the city’s 110 livery companies (trade and craft guilds, where this one dates back to 1345), the Worshipful Company of Gardeners is devoted to promoting excellence in the craft and practice of horticulture in the broadest sense.
It does so by supporting educational centers of horticultural excellence, sponsoring charitable endeavors associated with gardening and horticulture, promoting the fellowship of gardening and encouraging the display of plants and blooms across the City or London, wherever and whenever possible.
The Livery Companies of the City of London fund over 63 schools and give around £30m to charities annually. There are around 27,000 Liverymen in the City.
Bernhard has been involved with the organization since 1983. His father Jeffrey served on Court for some years. His two children and son-in-law are also involved with the livery company.
“It is a huge honor to be Master of one of the City liveries,” he says. “The 780 Lord Mayors of the City of London have all progressed in this way. It’s an amazing privilege and one that gives me great pride.”
