Mcllroy wins his fourth major and third consecutive title
LOUISVILLE, KY (Aug. 10, 2014) – With storm clouds fast approaching and after a mid-day rain delay, OMEGA Ambassador Rory Mcllroy won the 96th PGA Championship by one shot over Phil Mickelson as the sun set on Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville on Sunday.
Mcllroy dominated the first three days of play, firing rounds of 66-67-67, and came from behind to shoot a 68 on the final day of play for a 268 (-16). Today’s win is Mcllroy’s second-consecutive major championship and his second PGA Championship. He won The Open Championship just three weeks ago and won the PGA Championship in 2011.
“This win means a lot,” said McIlroy on Sunday night. “It’s my fourth major championship, and my second major in a row, and has just ended what has been the most incredible summer.”
“It’s hard to really put into words what it means to me right now,” McIlroy added, “but I know that it’s one of the biggest tournaments of my career and it inspires me to keep going forward and to try and win more.”
Following the Wanamaker Trophy presentation, President of The PGA of America Ted Bishop presented Mcllroy with the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m timepiece to commemorate his victory at Valhalla.
“I’m not sure if I’ll wear it or not,” said McIlroy of his new commemorative OMEGA timepiece. “I might just put it in a trophy case so that every time I look at it, it will remind me of my win here at Valhalla.”
“We congratulate Rory on his outstanding play at Valhalla and all that he has accomplished this year,” said OMEGA President Mr. Stephen Urquhart. “In our fourth year as a partner and Official Timekeeper of the PGA of America, it is thrilling to see our own OMEGA Ambassador win at the 2014 PGA Championship.”
The 2014 PGA Championship, held August 4th through August 10th at Valhalla, marked the 96th edition of one of the most anticipated golf events on the calendar and the season’s final major. OMEGA, an Official Patron of The PGA of America through 2022, served as Official Timekeeper of the PGA Championship for the fourth straight year.
The 97th PGA Championship will be held at Whistling Straights Golf Course in Kohler, Wisc., from the 10th through the 16th of August, 2015.
