Andrew Dorn: A Player To Watch At The U.S. Amateur

Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Aug. 11, 2014) – What does Andrew Dorn have in common with Arnold Palmer? Both won back-to-back Ohio Amateur championships. Palmer won them in 1953-54, while Dorn-an incoming senior at Coastal Carolina University-won last year and this. Now Dorn has his eyes on another prize that Palmer has, the U.S. Amateur, being played next week at Atlanta Athletic Club.

“He’s definitely someone to watch at the Amateur,” says noted golf instructor Allen Terrell, who recruited Dorn while the head golf coach at Coastal Carolina, and continues to work with the 21-year-old at his golf academy, located at TPC at Myrtle Beach. “He’s been playing well all summer. He made the cut at the Western Am, which is probably the best amateur tournament in the country, and he qualified for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst. And, of course, he won last year’s North-South Amateur at Pinehurst, which gave him a lot of great experience in match play.”

Dorn spent the week before the U.S. Amateur with Terrell in Myrtle Beach. “We’ve been polishing his fundamentals, working on a few little things and getting him out on the course.

“One of the things I really like about Andrew,” Terrell explains, “is that he’s a multisport athlete, having played all different sports as a kid before focusing on golf. I work with a lot of junior golfers, from those just getting started to good players looking for college scholarships and even beyond. The best of them usually have played many sports, which helps them develop physically and mentally. It gives them a big advantage.”

Besides working with golfers of all ages at his Myrtle Beach academy, Terrell travels around the country to work with junior golfers who enroll in his special year-long training program. “It starts in September and goes through May, to coordinate with the school year, which means we’re gearing up right now for the new season. Who knows, maybe I’ll be working with another Andrew Dorn. That’s a very exciting prospect.”
