Stafford, Va. – The Middle Atlantic Section of the PGA of America will host its annual Junior Capital Cup tournament this weekend, August 23rd and 24th, at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, VA. The Junior Capital Cup presented by Gear/Under Armour and Cleveland/Srixon Golf is a Ryder Cup-style event in which teams of twelve junior golfers from Virginia and Maryland, ages 18 and under, compete against each other in match play format. Foursome and four ball matches will take place at Princess Anne on Saturday and singles matches will conclude play on Sunday. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
Team Maryland has won the Capital Cup since its inception in 2009 and new captain, Lynne Hunter, PGA Head Professional at Kenwood Golf & Country Club in Bethesda, MD looks to keep the streak alive. Team Virginia’s captain, Josh Tremblay, PGA Head Professional at Springfield Golf & Country Club in Springfield, VA is in his fifth year and is confident that this year’s team will win their first cup.
The teams’ rosters were selected by state qualifiers. Two captain’s picks were also used for each team. The Virginia Qualifier was held at Glenmore Country Club in Keswick, VA on July 24th. Edric Wung (McLean, VA) shot a 5-under 67 to be the medalist in this qualifier. We believe this is the lowest score shot by a junior at Glenmore Country Club. Wung shot a 1-under 35 on the front nine and then shot 32 on the back with birdies at 10,13,14, and 18. Alex Rivera (Norfolk, VA) shot a 2-under 70 (35-35) to come in second.
The Maryland Qualifier was held at Old South Country Club on July 31st. Will Halamandaris of Crownsville, MD was the medalist with a 3-under par 69. Halamandaris shot 33 on the front nine and had three birdies and one triple bogey on the back nine to finish at 3-under. Luke Schaap of Potomac, Maryland shot 1-under 71 to finish second.
LOCAL SPOTLIGHT
Alex Rivera of Norfolk and Will Clark of Virginia Beach are the two local standouts on Team Virginia. Rivera had a successful senior year at Granby with a win at the Virginia High School League 6A South Regional. He is also a 6-time winner in the VSGA’s one-day events. Fifteen year old Will Clark is already making a name for himself in the junior golf world. He was the 14 & under division winner in the IJGT’s Battle at Virginia Beach last fall and is currently ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard as third in the state for the class of 2017.
