Classic Tripp Davis-Justin Leonard layout rated best in Metroplex
(THE COLONY, Texas) – Old American Golf Club – a pure golf experience from award-winning architect Tripp Davis and PGA TOUR player Justin Leonard – ranks No. 5 in GOLF Magazine’s 2014 “Best Courses Near You” in Texas.
The honor makes Old American the highest-ranked course in the Metroplex and positioned in the upper tier of Texas public golf facilities. GOLF Magazine’s ratings panel includes editorial staff and well-traveled golf industry insiders.
Old American was also recently rated as the top course in the Dallas / Fort Worth area in Golfweek’s 2014 “Best Courses You Can Play.” Media frequently cite Davis and Leonard’s commitment to delivering an authentic “Golden Age” design as one of the many reasons it’s an “instant classic.”
“We’re thrilled to be ranked among the very best public courses in a state as golf-rich as Texas,” says Mike McCabe, general manager. “Our staff works tirelessly to provide an exceptional golf experience, and this honor from GOLF Magazine is proof our continual quest is on the mark.”
Old American is PGA TOUR veteran Rod Pampling’s home course. The two-time TOUR champion uses Old American and its practice facilities while in DFW, and displays Old American’s logo on his bag during events. The course will host the 2014 Rod Pampling Classic charity golf tournament, Sept. 29.

About Old American Golf Club
Inspired by the ‘Golden Age’ of golf course architecture between 1911 and 1937, Old American’s natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes were influenced by such masterpieces as Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links, Prairie Dunes and Crystal Downs.
Acclaimed architect Tripp Davis, an accomplished amateur player and former All-American at the University of Oklahoma and PGA TOUR/Ryder Cup star Justin Leonard, who played his college golf at the University of Texas, toured and played a handful of America’s classic Golden Age golf courses prior to starting the design process for Old American.
The result is a golf course that emphasizes strategy and shot-making and flows with a natural rhythm from first tee to 18th green. Old American features six sets of tees, ranging from the 5215-yard forward markers to the 7174-yard “Leonard” tournament tees. Davis and Leonard conceived the routing and layout with both medal and match play in mind, as golfers are required to hold “steady to par” through a number of holes, but enticed to gamble on birdie or better during select stretches of the course.
