(BRYAN, Texas) – Traditions Club – the private golf and residential community in “Aggieland” and home of the Texas A&M golf teams – will host the prestigious “Mo”Morial Tournament September 8-10 on its highly-ranked Jack Nicklaus / Jack Nicklaus II-designed layout.
One of the top fall tournaments in women’s college golf kicks off the 2014-15 season for the Aggie women, who finished 10th at the 2014 NCAA Championships and are currently ranked 27th by Golfweek. This year’s field includes other highly ranked teams: Auburn (28th), Florida State (31st) and Kentucky (32nd). The event pays tribute to former Aggie women’s golfer Monica Welsh.
“We are excited to start this season on our home course and pay tribute to one of our all-time Aggie greats,” says Trelle McCombs, head coach of the Texas A&M women’s golf team. “Our student-athletes have played many practice rounds at the Traditions Club in anticipation of this event, and they all have raved about the conditions and playability of the golf course.”
The event honors former Aggie women’s golfer Monica Welsh. A four-year letter winner for the Aggies from 1978-1982, Welsh passed away in an automobile accident in 1992. She was a two-time TAIAW all-state selection and set the then-record for low competitive round (68) in 1981 at the TAIAW State Championship. The maroon and white have hosted the “Mo” 17 times and have finished first a “Mo”-best six times, including a record best 25-stroke victory in 1996.
Traditions Club has hosted the “Mo”Morial several times since opening in 2004, and challenged many of the best women’s collegiate golfers including LPGA members Stacy Lewis, Anna Nordqvist, Azahara Munoz and Gerina Piller.
“The ‘Mo’Morial continues the club’s impressive run of hosting elite golf tournaments of all levels,” says Bill Horton, General Manager of Traditions Club. “We are honored to be the venue for the “Mo”Morial and wish all the women the best of luck.”
Traditions Club was the site of the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf National Championship, and recently hosted the Texas Golf Association (TGA) Men’s Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship. Next year it will host the 2015 State Four-Ball Championship, one of the TGA’s four majors.
The 7,146-yard layout traverses rolling hills punctuated by thick stands of hardwoods. More than 100 feet of elevation change creates a true, Texas Hill Country atmosphere. Bordering the club is the James and Sarina Goodman Family Aggie Golf Complex, one of America’s premier college golf facilities.
