“The original Carmel Valley golf experience” adds new chapter to 50-year history

CARMEL, Calif. (September 4, 2014) – Adding a brand new chapter to an illustrious 50-year history, Quail Lodge Golf Club has named Wendy Stuart as its first woman Director of Golf.

An award-winning PGA of America club professional, Stuart comes to Quail Lodge Golf Club from The Bridges Golf Club in San Ramon, where she served as head golf professional the past four years. She was selected the national Golf Professional of the Year for KemperSports, which operates 94 clubs in the country, including Quail Lodge.

Stuart is not a complete stranger to Quail Lodge, having stepped in temporarily during 2013 to oversee operations during a transition period for the club. She gives the club an impressive women’s lineup, joining celebrated PGA teacher Katherine Marren, Quail’s Director of Instruction who is ranked as one of the top instructors in the country.

“I am just thrilled to be here at Quail Lodge,” said Stuart, who grew up in the Central Valley town of Ripon. “This is a wonderful opportunity to be part of a club where a lot of great things are going to happen. I think this is a time when Quail Lodge is really going to shine brighter than ever.”

Stuart began her career in 1999 at PGA West in Palm Springs, and has held a variety of positions at several other prestigious clubs, including Del Rio Country Club in Modesto and Claremont Country Club in Oakland.

Stuart will be in charge of the overall Quail Lodge golf operation, as well as the golf staff, and will assist with the golf course renovation project that is to begin later this fall. Her 15 years of experience has included numerous roles, including operations and merchandising.

“I grew up in a farming family and we worked hard,” Stuart said, “so I know what it means to dig in and get the job done, whatever it may be.”

Stuart currently serves as a board member for the Junior Golf Association of Northern California and is the coach for the JGANC’s Junior America’s Cup girls’ team. An avid competitor, Stuart is co-captain of the Northern California PGA Women’s Cup team.

A food and art enthusiast, Stuart is excited about living in the Carmel area on a permanent basis. She joins a list of prestigious golf professionals who have called Quail Lodge home through the years, including iconic PGA instructors Ben Doyle, Laird Small and Marren, along with tour pros Bobby Clampett and Janet Coles.

When Quail Lodge Golf Club opened in 1964, it reinvented the image of golf in a region that was world-renown for its golf courses, as well as for coastal summer fog and professional tournaments played in the rain. Built on the original 240 acres of farmland that also served as home to thousands of native quail, the strategic Robert Muir Graves design has lured legends and locals alike the past 50 years, with its warm climate and year-round playability.
