In many parts of the world golf clubs are feeling the pinch of rising operating costs and flagging membership. In Asia, this is happening but because of the ab-sence of serious industry watchers and measurement/reporting tools, the extent of the real problem is not known.
When the problem surfaces, it is going to be serious. Rather than wait for things to hap-pen, the 2014 Asia Pacific Golf Summit is going to dive in to explore what options are open to golf course owners and operators in the light of what is fast becoming a global challenge to keep golf clubs relevant and financially viable.
One option seems to be mergers to stem-off declining memberships, increases in oper-ating costs and other related challenges like an ageing population. Why not? After all, in the corporate world, this is going on all the time. And it makes excellent business sense!
So how does one pull off a merger of golf clubs? For the answer, we turn to two guys in Australia who came up with the formula. They are Heath Wilson of the Kingswood Golf Club and Gary Richardson of the Peninsula Country Golf Club.
Both had been independently reviewing the state of the industry in Australia, the chal-lenges faced by their clubs and strategic options that were available. Once they got to-gether, worked out the mechanics and dynamics of a merger, they ran it by their respec-tive boards and it took quick traction with the board members. And shortly thereafter, the merger materialised!
Wilson and Richardson have been a formidable team in accomplishing this “world’s first” merger of two private golf clubs and implementing the vision voted on by the founding members. Through their vision and foresight, two innovative out-of-the-box thinkers have made possible the formation of the Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club, bring-ing together two of the best courses in Australia with “state of the art” facilities into a Club with the highest level of financial security in the country.
All this made possible by two guys with revolutionary ideas! Come listen to them at APGS 2014 – what they have to say can be a life-saver going forward and it’s too good a message to let slip by!
