(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.) – Old Palm Golf Club – the premier private and exclusive residential golf club community in the Palm Beaches – congratulates resident and member, Lee Westwood, on being named to Europe’s 2014 Ryder Cup team.

The 41-year-old Englishman, who lives and plays at Old Palm full-time, was selected by European captain Paul McGinley to compete in September’s matches in Scotland. The veteran made his debut on the 1997 team and has competed in the last eight Ryder Cups.

“The Ryder Cup has been a massive part of my career,” says Westwood. “I’m delighted to be representing Europe again.”

Westwood and his family reside in a Custom Estates home overlooking the Old Palm Golf Course. He utilizes the 7,400-yard, Raymond Floyd-designed course and world-renowned 33-acre Golf Studio practice facility to sharpen all facets of his game.

Old Palm Honorary Club Chairman, course designer and resident, Raymond Floyd, was selected as an assistant Ryder Cup captain for the United States team in February. Floyd is a four-time major champion and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. This will be his 11th Ryder Cup spanning six decades. In addition to playing on eight teams, he captained the 1989 squad and was a vice-captain in 2008.

“As vice-captain, we don’t hit a shot. So all our responsibilities are to see that these guys are comfortable, they are happy with the surroundings, and we try to be an uplifting spirit,” says Floyd, the oldest player to ever compete in Ryder Cup as a 51-year-old in 1993. “We’ve all been there and hopefully they will respect that and they will respond.”

“We are beyond thrilled to have two of our Club’s residents competing at Gleneagles for the 2014 Ryder Cup,” says Darlene Impellittiere, General Manager of Old Palm Golf Club. “Congratulations to Mr. Westwood and Mr. Floyd who are both integral parts of our community. We wish them both the best of luck!”

Old Palm residents also include international PGA TOUR superstars Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, as well as 1991 Open Champion and CBS Sports golf announcer Ian Baker-Finch. Each touts its exclusivity, gracious neighborhoods, award-winning independent builders and sense of kinship among residents and members. Darren Clarke, 2011 British Open Champion, is also a member and frequently visits Old Palm when his playing schedules permits.

Old Palm’s tournament-caliber golf course presents an enticing blend of power and precision-oriented holes. Traditional square tee boxes give the course a classic feel, and large landing areas and subtly-elevated greens emphasize approach shot values.

A game-improvement enthusiast’s dream, Old Palm’s 33-acre Golf Studio houses a double-ended range, V-1-equipped hitting bay with TrackMan technology and short-game area. Three full-length practice holes – a par 3, 4 and 5 – allow golfers to replicate shots and angles they encounter on the par-72 course.
