SFPGA professional to be recognized at Bobby Goodman Memorial Pro-Am
Atlantis, Fla – John Haines, PGA Life Member has been named the 2014 Florida State Senior Honoree. John’s passion and dedication to the game of golf make him a deserving recipient for this award. John will be honored by participating in the Bobby Goodman Memorial Pro-Am on October 16th at the Naples Beach Club where he will be recognized at the awards reception immediately following play.
Haines began his golf career as an assistant at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland in 1959. He was elected to PGA membership in 1963. After 5 years in Maryland, he became the PGA Head Professional at Goose Creek Golf Club in Leesburg Virginia for 10 years and then became PGA Head Professional, director of golf and general manager at Hunt Valley Golf Club in Hunt Valley, Maryland for 16 years. After two years as Director of Golf at Greystone Golf Course in Maryland, he moved to Jackson, Wyoming and became the PGA Head Professional at Teton Pines Resort and Country Club. In 2002, Haines moved to Hobe Sound, Fla. to retire.
“Teaching by example” is a philosophy that Haines strongly believes in when it comes to being a leader. His passion and commitment to the game of golf prove that Haines is the epitome of a PGA Professional. During his 40 years of service to the PGA of America, John held numerous leadership positions. Haines served on the Middle Atlantic PGA Board of Directors for over twenty years from 1969-1988, including President from 1984-1985. He served on the PGA Board of Directors as the District 9 Director from 2000-2002 when he represented the Rocky Mountains, Colorado and Utah Sections. He also served as a member of the PGA Rules Committee from 1982-2002.
“I owe everything to the PGA. I would not be the person I am today if it weren’t for what I learned as a PGA Member,” says Haines.
Haines has been recognized with numerous awards for his dedication to the game of golf and the PGA of America. These awards include: 1979 MAPGA Bill Strausbaugh Award, 1982 MAPGA Horton Smith Trophy, 1989 MAPGA President’s Award, Rocky Mountain Section Merchandiser of the Year (Resort) Award in 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000 and 2001; 1985 MAPGA PGA Professional of the Year and was elected to the MAPGA Hall of Fame in 2004.
These days Haines enjoys playing the game he fell in love with as a child. He also helps as a rules official for the South Florida PGA at numerous Section and Junior events. When not on the golf course he can be found spending time with his wife, Kathryn, children and grandchildren.
Through his service to the PGA of America, dedication to being a leader for other PGA Professionals, and commitment to the game of golf, we honor John as the 2014 Senior Honoree.
