WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (September 23, 2014) – An established leader in golf course environmental management, Golden Horseshoe Golf Club has been reconfirmed as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by Audubon International. Golden Horseshoe has held this distinction since 2001.
Golden Horseshoe Golf Club’s continued efforts to enhance wildlife habitat and protect the environment at both of its 18-hole championship layouts – the Gold Course and Green Course (in photo above) – as well as the nine-hole Spotswood Course, surpassed the standards set by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program.
The golf courses were recognized by the Audubon organization for maintaining naturalized areas to provide water, food and habitat for local and migratory wildlife, particularly the connected patches of native grasses between the holes that offer wildlife corridors for movement. Other elements of Golden Horseshoe’s program that won praise from Audubon International:
• Minimal disturbance to the natural surrounding landscape, including the old growth forest
• Colorful wildflowers in natural areas cited as aesthetically pleasing
• Implementation of wide buffer zones around water features to help ensure proper water quality
• Native aquatic vegetation that provides important habitat and food for wildlife
• Pest management methods that contribute to enhanced water quality and the beauty of the course
• Successful reduction of fertilizer and chemical inputs, while maintaining pristine playing conditions
• More efficient water use, with careful attention to weather patterns, targeted and individually controlled irrigation heads, and routine irrigation system maintenance
• Maintaining nature trails around the course to encourage club members and guests to explore the surrounding wildlife
There are now more than 2,200 golf courses enrolled in the Audubon program and 906 are currently designated as Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries.
Recognized as one of the “100 Greatest Golf Destinations in North America” by GOLF magazine, Golden Horseshoe also is one of the elite properties that excel in course design and playability.
The Gold Course opened in 1963, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr., who also designed the Spotswood Course, which opened in 1964. Jones’ son Rees Jones designed the Green Course in 1991, and in 1998 Rees Jones updated the Gold Course with renovations that adhered to his father’s original strategies.
In addition to golf, guests have a choice of more than 1,000 guest rooms among five distinctive hotel properties, from economy to luxury, surrounding Colonial Williamsburg’s Revolutionary City. Purchase of Colonial Williamsburg resort services and products supports The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the private, not-for-profit center for history and citizenship that preserves and operates the restored 18th-century Revolutionary capital of Virginia.
