LAKE MARY, FL – Some of the best junior golfers in Florida will converge on Timacuan Golf and Country Club this weekend for the next stop on the Florida State Golf Association Junior Tour.
The event will feature boys and girls aged 13 to 15. It is a 36-hole stroke-play competition.
Timacuan has become one of the most popular tournament courses in Florida, especially since re-doing all 18 greens with Mini-Verde grass in the summer of 2013. The putting surfaces at the 27-year-old Lake Mary course are the best they have ever been.
Timacuan, a Ron Garl design, has hosted dozens of tournaments of national scope over the years, including the annual $10,000 Timacuan Scramble every January, and most of golf’s professional mini tours as well as numerous junior tournaments.
“Timacuan has a storied tradition of hosting great players and great tournament golf in the Central Florida market,” said Nate Stevenson, Director of Golf Operations. “Being a championship layout with six sets of tees, the course is extremely playable for any level of golfer. With events such as U.S. Open qualifiers and many high-profile junior tournaments, we have worked hard to establish our facility as the best championship venue in central Florida that everyone can come out and enjoy.”
Timacuan has received rave reviews from the many PGA and LPGA Tour players who have competed in the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble during PGA Merchandise Show week each January.
“I really enjoyed the golf course,” said Graeme McDowell, the Irishman who won the U.S. Open in 2010. “It is a great layout with a links-like feel to it. It can be testy in places if you get off the beaten path, but it is a very fair course. And it is in great condition.”
Said LPGA Tour star Brittany Lincicome, “This is a terrific golf course. It is a good test of golf. You have to be able to move the ball around to be successful here.”
Timacuan features two distinctly different nines. The front nine has a Scottish feel, with open fairways, mounding, sprawling bunkers and large greens. The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel featuring stately oaks, tall pines, and several water hazards that demand precision off the tee and to the green.
