VACAVILLE, Calif. – The Northern California Section of the PGA is pleased to announce that Stacy Baker of Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, Calif., is the recipient of the 2014 NCPGA Golf Course Superintendent of the Year Award. The award is given to an individual for their expertise in the maintenance, operations, and management of golf courses and their leadership contributions within the NCPGA Section.
“I have always tried to express and teach staff that the purpose of our efforts in golf course conditioning is to accommodate the game of golf. The golf ball is first, fiscal responsibility second and agronomy third. Through these principles, I have worked together with Northern California PGA members to provide profitable and quality golf course conditioning for golfers of all levels,” said Baker.
Baker has been involved in the golf course industry for more than 25 years, most recently as the golf course superintendent at Peach Tree Golf and Country Club in Marysville, Calif. (2008-2013) and Table Mountain Golf Course in Oroville, CA (2005-2008). Baker began his career in 1987 as part of a seasonal golf course maintenance staff while still in high school. He continued to work seasonally while attending the University of Colorado. After college, he moved to Portland, Oregon to secure his first full time golf course maintenance position.
In 1999, Baker had the opportunity to design, build and grow-in a 3-hole short game area at Trails End Golf Center in Oregon City. This experience enabled him to construct, remodel and grow-in various areas of golf courses throughout his career. In 2001, he became Assistant Superintendent at Tumwater Valley Golf Course in Washington.
“A member of the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America (GCSAA), Stacy believes in building and coaching a solid team that possess keen observation, respectful communication, flexible adaptability, and constant accountability,” said NCPGA Awards Chairman Mark Naylor, PGA. “In addition, he feels that a Golf Course Superintendent’s ability to experience and play the game is vital in understanding golf course conditioning from the player’s perspective.”
Baker is among 19 recipients of the NCPGA’s 2014 Annual Section Awards. Section awards are given to PGA Professionals and industry leaders who have excelled in the game and business of golf. The NCPGA will recognize its 2014 Annual Section Award winners on Sunday, December 7 at the NCPGA Special Awards Ceremony & President’s Dinner at Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, California. This event, a highlight for the year, will be held the evening prior to the NCPGA Annual Meeting. There are more than 200 golf professionals and industry leaders expected to attend. E-Z-Go Textron is a presenting partner and PGA Resort & Spa and Bluebird Wines are supporting partners of the Awards Ceremony.
