PHOENIX (Jan 14, 2015) – PGA Tour rookie Carlos Ortiz, who is playing fully exempt this season after his three-win campaign on the Web.com Tour in 2014, has signed an agreement to play PING equipment, PING Chairman & CEO John A. Solheim announced today.
Ortiz, 23, was the Web.com Tour Player of the Year in 2014 and is the #1-ranked professional in Mexico. The native of Guadalajara, Mexico, grew up playing at Guadalajara Country Club, the same home course as PING brand ambassador and former LPGA great Lorena Ochoa. Ortiz played collegiately at the University of North Texas.
“It is rare for someone to have such rapid success in his rookie season on the Web.com Tour as Carlos did, so he’s been fun to watch,” Solheim said. “He won in only his fourth Web.com tournament last year and he won again three weeks later, and he has a top 10 on the PGA Tour this season, so he’s been very consistent, a quality we look for in a player. He’s a very talented and confident young man, and we’re happy to have Carlos representing the PING brand.”
Ortiz has four appearances on the PGA Tour in the 2014-15 wraparound season, recording a top 10 at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, and he will play this week at the Sony Open in Hawaii. “This is what I dreamed about as a boy in Mexico: to compete against the best players in the world. PING has made the transition a lot smoother and more comfortable for me. I’ve been playing their equipment for a long time, and the tour reps know me and they know how to custom-fit me with equipment that brings out the best in my game. I’m really pleased to be known as a PING player.”
As part of the multi-year agreement, Ortiz will wear a PING hat, carry a PING staff bag and play 11 PING clubs. Financial terms and the length of the agreement were not disclosed.
