Private Club’s Tom Weiskopf championship course named best in Wyoming
less than a year after reopening
January 13, 2015 (Jackson Hole, WY) – Snake River Sporting Club, Jackson Hole’s premier private club and residential community, was named “Best In State” for Wyoming in Golf Digest’s 2015-2016 “America’s Greatest Courses” annual rankings, announced in the February issue.
The Tom Weiskopf-designed championship golf course first opened in 2006 and was named the magazine’s No. 2 “Best New Private Course in the U.S.” in the 2007 rankings. Following a five-year closure, the golf course reopened for play in May 2014 after a $5 million rehabilitation that included replacing the surface of every green, restoring all bunkers, and adding new practice facilities.
“We are honored to be recognized as the number one golf course in Wyoming less than a year after reopening,” says Jeff Heilbrun, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of Snake River Sporting Club. “Our team has been tremendously committed to getting back into successful operations while making sure the Club continues to embody the unique and authentic Western experience members can find only in Wyoming.”
The Weiskopf masterpiece at Snake River Sporting Club measures 7,500 yards from the tips, incorporating a layout that weaves through native pines, cottonwoods and willows just yards from the Club’s six miles of private access to the famed Snake River. With stunning views of Bridger-Teton National Forest, the very walkable course provides members with world-class golf in the ultimate Western setting. Mr. Weiskopf took great care to incorporate the natural landscape into the course architecture, and still considers Snake River Sporting Club as “my finest US design to date.”
Taking advantage of the picture-perfect setting, the acclaimed golf course challenges golfers of all levels with two nines of varying character. While the first half winds through an extension of the 3.5 million acres of national forest bordering the property, the course begins to open up at the 9th hole for play along the natural river bottom. “My absolute favorite hole is number 5,” says Snake River Sporting Club Head Golf Pro Kali Quick. “This hole sees golden eagles, elk, moose and deer. The green sits within a 9-iron of the river and the hole is strategically placed between pine trees to make you feel like you’re playing golf in a forest.”
Golf Digest reaches over 1.6 million readers per month and is considered the #1 golf publication.
