(Westhampton, NY – January 26, 2015) — The Ann Liguori Foundation is pleased to announce that for the first time, a scholarship will be offered to a student pursuing a sports media career as one of the scholarships administered by the New York Women in Communications Foundation.
The scholarship will be presented at the 2015 Matrix Awards, held April 27, 2015, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. The Matrix Awards, which recognize outstanding achievement by women in various aspects of the communication industry, is run by New York Women in Communications, Inc. and hosted this year by Meredith and Chobani.
The Ann Liguori Foundation was established by sports radio and television talk show host, reporter and author Ann Liguori in 2009 to support a variety of not-for-profit organizations and causes. Ann’s annual charity golf classic, which takes place this year on Monday, May 18th at Friar’s Head on the East End of Long Island, is the Foundation’s main fundraiser. The Ann Liguori Foundation Sports Media Scholarship supports the study of sports media, communications or management and is intended for those hoping to pursue a career in sports broadcasting, reporting, programming or production. It includes an internship with CBS Sports Radio Network in New York City.
Each year, the New York Women in Communications Foundation, a 501c3, awards 15-20 scholarships to graduating high school seniors, college undergraduate and graduate school students who intend to pursue or further a career in communications. Applicants must be a resident of NY, NJ, PA or CT or attending school in one of those states and be majoring, planning to declare a major, or pursuing an advanced degree in a communications-related field including, but not limited to, advertising, broadcasting, communications, digital media, English, film, journalism, marketing, public relations, or publishing. Applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.2 or better (or the recalculated high school equivalent), and applicants for the Ann Liguori Foundation Sports Media Scholarship must be at least a rising junior.
“We are grateful to Ann for her support of a new student scholarship in 2015,” says Judith Harrison, President of the New York Women in Communications Foundation. “Importantly, the scholarship focuses on sports media, a traditionally male-leaning aspect of our industry. We are delighted we can now assist young women looking to pursue non-traditional media roles and one day break glass ceilings.”
Scholarship recipients are chosen by the New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship Committee on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community-service activities, honors and other awards or recognition, work experience, and statement of goals and aspirations. Need and unusual personal and/or family circumstances are also considered.
