Europe’s 2016 Ryder Cup captain tabs soccer, rugby, cricket, olympic legends for inaugural competition
(DUBAI, United Arab Emirates) – The ICONS Cup – a first-of-its-kind, two-day, team competition taking place April 22-24 at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course – announces Captain Darren Clarke has selected a cadre of soccer, rugby, cricket and Olympic legends as members of his Rest of the World (ROTW) team.
Stepping off the pitch and onto the fairways will be club and international soccer stars Luís Figo, Robbie Fowler, Andriy Shevchenko and Dwight Yorke. They’re joined by rugby idols George Gregan, Brian O’Driscoll and Mike Tindall, MBE; renowned cricketers Brian Lara and Shane Warne; and five-time Olympic gold medal rower Sir Steve Redgrave.
Rounding out Clarke’s 12-man Team ROTW will be two additional icons to be named separately. The event format will mirror that of a Ryder Cup spectacle for the Northern Irishman, who just last week was named Captain of Europe’s 2016 Ryder Cup squad.
Team USA – led by World Golf Hall of Famer and 1992 Masters Champion Fred Couples – will be announced in the coming weeks.
“These men have excelled at the highest levels of their respective sports and seen their fair share of pressure-packed situations,” says Clarke, the 2011 Open Championship winner and member of five European Ryder Cup sides. “While team golf is its own unique animal, I’m confident my guys are up to the task.”

It exclusively features low-handicap, A-list athletes playing morning foursomes (alternate shot) on Day One followed by 12 singles matches (Thursday, April 23).
