NHL’s No. 3 all-time goal scorer joins fellow hockey Hall of Famer Mike Modano on Team USA
(DUBAI, United Arab Emirates) – The ICONS Cup – a first-of-its-kind, two-day, Ryder Cup-style team golf competition taking place April 22-24 at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course – announces Hockey Hall of Fame member Brett Hull has accepted an invitation to play for Fred Couples’ Team USA.
One of the game’s greatest snipers, the “Golden Brett” ranks third on the National Hockey League’s (NHL) all-time goal list with 741. A lynchpin on two Stanley Cup-winning teams (1999 Dallas Stars and 2002 Detroit Red Wings), his championship-clinching, overtime goal for the Stars in Game Six of the 1999 Finals is one of the most memorable in league history.
In 1991 as a member of the St. Louis Blues, Hull won the Hart Memorial Trophy and Lester B. Pearson Award as the league’s most valuable player. No stranger to international competition, he was a member of the victorious 1996 World Cup of Hockey team and is a two-time Olympian, winning a silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. The eight-time NHL all-star was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009, joining his father Bobby to become its first father-son pair.
Hull will play alongside fellow Hall of Famer and Dallas Stars teammate Mike Modano on Team USA. Major League Baseball icons Ken Griffey Jr. and Tom Glavine have also been announced with more competitors to follow in the coming days.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of Fred’s Team and can’t wait to compete in this incredible event,” Hull told iconscup.com. “To represent my country in golf with 11 other guys in Dubai is kind of a bucket list experience that doesn’t come around that often… but make no mistake, we are going there to win and bring this inaugural trophy back to the States.”
Conceived, owned and produced by Worldwide Sports & Entertainment, Ltd. (WWSEL), the ICONS Cup is a significant departure from a standard celebrity golf event. It exclusively features low-handicap, A-list athletes playing morning foursomes (alternate shot) on Day One followed by 12 singles matches (Thursday, April 23). The ICONS Cup concludes the following day with 12 additional singles matches.
Team USA will battle Darren Clarke’s 12-man Team Rest of the World (ROTW) in a match play golf event. Its roster of international sporting superstars is set: Gabriel Batistuta, Luis Figo, Robbie Fowler, Andriy Shevchenko and Dwight Yorke (football); Kapil Dev, Brian Lara and Shane Warne (cricket); George Gregan, Brian O’Driscoll and Mike Tindall, MBE (rugby); and Sir Steve Redgrave (Olympic rowing).
