Oversize grip leader finishes first and second at season’s first major championship
WIXOM, Mich. – Relying on the patented parallel technology of SuperStroke’s Flatso 1.0 putter grip, Jordan Spieth went on an historic four-day run at Augusta shattering records en route to his first career major championship. It was one for the ages, while the 21 year-old seemed to be coming of age, making his mark as a Major champion and rising to #2 in the world rankings.
Spieth achieved the lowest opening round score of any champion (64), made the most birdies in the tournament (28), had the lowest 36-hole score (-14), lowest 54-hole score (-16), tied for the lowest 72-hole score (-18), and was the first wire-to-wire champion since 1976 (1 of 5). He also posted the lowest score for the championship after he rolled in a birdie putt on the par-5 15th hole Sunday to go to 19-under-par for the tournament.
The Dallas native was masterful with the putter throughout the week needing just 108 putts for the tournament, an average of 27 per round. With birdies at the first and third on Sunday, Spieth sent an early message to his challengers. This followed with key birdies at the par-5 eighth, 13th and 15th holes. Yet Spieth said that the key moment in the tournament came on the 16th hole.
“…when Justin had that birdie putt, then I had that slider for par, that’s when I really felt like it could get out of my hands if I’m not careful here,” said Spieth. “I stepped over that putt just trying to put good speed, feed it out there and visualize a line. That was certainly — I would call that the biggest putt I’ve ever hit in my life.”
For the season, Spieth is ranked first amongst his peers in Putting Average with a 1.673 average, first in Putts Per Round with a 27.47 average and first in scoring average with a 69.264 average. He’s ranked fourth in Strokes Gained-Putting with an .801 average, a total of 21.626 putts gained and fifth in Overall Putting Average with a 1.526 average.
“We want to congratulate Jordan on his first major championship and achieving his dream of winning at Augusta,” said Dean Dingman, President SuperStroke Golf. “To win a major at 21 and be the second youngest player to do so is certainly impressive. Each week Jordan continues to be one of the most consistent putters on the tours and this week at Augusta was no different. We are privileged to have him as a global ambassador for SuperStroke.”
Five additional players using SuperStroke grips finished in the top 25 at Augusta including one who tied for second place playing SuperStroke’s JP-40 grip. His tournament total included two eagles and 19 birdies.
SuperStroke’s patented parallel technology design allows for even pressure in both hands, eliminating wrist movement in the putting stroke. This helps the golfer swing the putter more freely, making it easier to use the big muscles in the arms and shoulders, and minimizes one hand dominating the other.
