Historical Golf Memorabilia Produces Major Profits For Buyers, Collectors On TheGolfAuction.com

April 14, 2015

TAMPA, Fla. – While millions of golf fans were witnessing history being made on the hallowed grounds of Augusta National Golf Course Sunday, thousands more were battling it out online in a bidding war for pieces of golf history at TheGolfAuction.com. Later that evening after the coveted green jacket was presented to Jordan Spieth, one fortunate bidder had obtained their own piece of golf history — a set of Ben Hogan irons (2-9) that Jack Fleck used to upset Hogan in the 1955 U.S. Open. The winning bidder paid $37,000.

Fleck, a virtual unknown rookie on the PGA Tour from Iowa, prevented Hogan from winning a record 5th U.S. Open title. Considered one of the greatest upsets in golf history, Fleck came from behind on Sunday forcing an 18-hole playoff. Fleck shot a 69 on Monday defeating Hogan who shot 72. He did so, ironically, using a custom-set of Ben Hogan irons. Fleck passed away in March 2014 at the age of 92.

“We were very pleased with the success of this auction,” said Kip Ingle, co-founder of The Golf Auction. “We had the highest number of online bidders than we’ve ever had before, which tells us that the collection of and interest in higher-end golf memorabilia is on the upswing.”

Other notable items that sold in the auction were: a framed display of the signatures of the first 42 Masters champions, including rare autographs of Claude Harmon and Craig Wood, which sold for $6,735.55; an Augusta National Golf Club Members Golf Bag, which sold for $4, 575; a 2015 Jordan Spieth signed Masters logo golf ball sold for $681 and a Texas Orange golf ball signed by Spieth sold for $591.

With the season’s first major championship in the books, Jordan Spieth will now focus his attention on the U.S. Open and a shot at his second major championship. Ingle and The Golf Auction team are already accepting consignåÂment items and looking for golf memorabilia buyers, sellers and collectors to participate in its next major … the U.S. Open auction in June.
