Reputation for unmatched service makes Middle East’s largest airline a
natural match for luxury lifestyle event
(DUBAI, United Arab Emirates) – The ICONS Cup – a first-of-its-kind, two-day, Ryder Cup-style team golf competition taking place April 22-24 at Dubai Creek Golf Club – announces Emirates Airlines has been selected as its official airline partner.
The Middle East’s largest airline, Emirates flies to 140-plus destinations in more than 80 countries. Renowned for its inflight cuisine, breadth of inflight entertainment and excellence of overall service, Dubai-based Emirates has won numerous awards over the past two decades. In 2014, these included being named “Aviation Company of the Year” by the Aviation Industry Awards and “Best Airline Worldwide” by Business Traveller magazine.
“Emirates sets the global standard for luxury air travel,” says Dan Hudson, Commercial Director of Worldwide Sports & Entertainment, Ltd. (WWSEL), the boutique sports, events and lifestyle business that created the ICONS Cup. “Its status perfectly aligns with our positioning of this event as a must-see lifestyle and sporting experience.”
A significant departure from a standard celebrity golf event, The ICONS Cup exclusively features low-handicap, A-list athletes playing morning foursomes (alternate shot) on Day One followed by 12 singles matches (Thursday, April 23). The ICONS Cup concludes the following day with 12 additional singles matches.
“The ICONS Cup 2015 golf competition is an innovative event with international appeal and it reaffirms Dubai’s status as a premier destination for high profile sporting events,” says Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations. “Emirates is a firm believer that sports, like air travel, has the power to connect people across the world. The beauty of this event is that it will bring together great players from other sport disciplines for friendly showcase of golf, in the ultimate meeting place for the world – Dubai.”
Sporting legends thus far announced for Team USA – captained by former Masters champion Fred Couples – are Kelly Slater (surfing); Ray Allen (basketball); Ken Griffey Jr., Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux (baseball); Brett Hull and Mike Modano (hockey); and Marcus Allen and Eric Dickerson (American football); and Oscar De La Hoya (boxing).
Team USA will battle 2016 European Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke’s Team Rest of the World (ROTW). Its roster of international sports superstars features Gabriel Batistuta, Luis Figo, Robbie Fowler, Andriy Shevchenko and Dwight Yorke (football); Kapil Dev, Brian Lara and Shane Warne (cricket); George Gregan, Brian O’Driscoll and Mike Tindall, MBE (rugby); and Sir Steve Redgrave (Olympic rowing).
