Pebble Beach, CA – The Northern California PGA Foundation pays tribute today to two PGA TOUR Legends Dave Stockton and Roger Maltbie at the 8th Annual “The Langley – A Tribute to Legends.” The Langley is a charitable golf tournament and social event that honors the game’s legends and those who have made a positive impact on the sport. Through the event, the NCPGA Foundation raises funds to contribute to various community programs.

This year’s dinner with the honorees is being held at the Beach Club in Pebble Beach, California. Tomorrow, teams of four amateurs and a PGA Professional will compete for the fourth consecutive year at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in The Langley Pro-Am Golf Tournament. Stockton and Maltbie join an impressive list of past TOUR honorees including Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Arnold Palmer, Ken Venturi, Tom Watson, Billy Casper, Nancy Lopez, Patty Sheehan, and the event’s namesake Jim Langley.

Mr. Langley, PGA, was Head Professional at Cypress Point Club for 34 years and passed away in 2013. Langley was respected worldwide as a model PGA Professional, gentleman and gentle soul.

“We are proud to honor another two amazing golf legends this year. Dave and Roger have each contributed to golf through their success on the PGA TOUR as well as by how they have translated those achievements to long-lasting careers within the industry,” remarked Chris Thomas, NCPGA Executive Director and COO. “Their roles have helped golfers and golf spectators worldwide increase their skills and enjoyment of the game.”

Honorees Dave Stockton and Roger Maltbie

Stockton, well-known for his putting expertise since joining the PGA Tour in 1964, has 25 career Tour wins including two PGA Championships, two Senior Player Championships and a U.S. Senior Open to his credit. He captained the victorious Ryder Cup team at Kiawah Island in 1991. As Assistant Captain, Stockton backed up former 1991 team member, Captain Paul Azinger, to another U.S. Ryder Cup victory at Valhalla Country Club in Kentucky in 2008.

His success continued when he transitioned to instruction, becoming known as the pre-eminent short game expert after working with notables such as Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy. Stockton is also a best-selling author of short-game instructional books. In addition, for almost 50 years, Stockton has been providing some of the best corporate outing and group clinic experiences to clubs and Fortune 500 companies.

Maltbie, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour has been a key member of NBC Sports’ golf coverage team since 1992. As the network’s lead course reporter, Maltbie usually draws the assignment of walking with the leaders. Maltbie has won praise for his entertaining commentary, delivered in a conversational and sometimes humorous style on NBC’s coverage of the PGA Tour and events such as the U.S. Open, Ryder Cup, President’s Cup and rest of NBC’s golf tour.

A native of Modesto, Calif., Maltbie attended San Jose State University. He began his professional career in 1975 with tremendous success, winning back-to-back events: The Quad Cities Open and the Pleasant Valley Classic, which led to him being named PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year. The following year, he won the inaugural Memorial Tournament, beating Hale Irwin in a four-hole playoff. Maltbie is one of only two players (host Jack Nicklaus is the other) to have played in every Memorial since its inception in 1976.

Maltbie’s other career wins include the 1985 Manufacturers Hanover Westwchester Classic and 1985 NEC World Series of Golf. He carded 55 Top 10 finishes in his career despite enduring two shoulder surgeries.

Maltbie, who plays a limited schedule on the Champions Tour, teamed up with his NBC colleague, Gary Koch, in 2003 to win the Raphael (better ball) Division at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.

The American Heart Association’s Saving Strokes, Cal Men’s Golf, and Meals on Wheels of Monterey also benefit from the proceeds of The Langley event. The NCPGA Foundation is honored to continue the legacy of Jim Langley through the Jim Langley Scholarship Fund that enables outstanding high school seniors to pursue their life’s dreams through secondary education.
