MOUNT PLEASANT, SC — (September 4, 2015) – Five Special Olympics South Carolina golfers and two coaches have been selected to participate in the 2015 Special Olympics National Golf Invitational, taking place in Hilton Head, September 10-13.
The golfers are Chris Conant, Mount Pleasant; Nikki DeWitte, Mount Pleasant; Ashlyn Knight, Mount Pleasant; Sean Miller, Daniel Island; and Ben Read, Summerville. Coaches/Partners are Van Conant, Mount Pleasant, and Patrick Townes, Charleston. The program is based at Patriots Point Links in partnership with Mount Pleasant Recreation Department and Special Olympics South Carolina.
“We are so proud of all our golfers and so grateful to Patriots Point for working with us and our players over the past six years,” said Shelli Davis, coach of Special Olympics golf for the Town of Mount Pleasant. “It is quite an honor to be chosen for the National Invitational. These golfers will be representing Mount Pleasant, Patriots Point and the State of South Carolina on a national platform. And it’s coming at a great time – just as we’re starting our fall season – so it builds even more excitement and enthusiasm for our golf program here.”
The 8-week fall season for Special Olympics Golf takes place from September through November in preparation for the 2015 Special Olympics South Carolina State Games in Greenville later this fall. It is open to all Special Olympics South Carolina athletes. Volunteer coaches from the Town of Mount Pleasant and Patriots Point work with the athletes and all costs are covered by Special Olympics South Carolina.
“Our athletes love to participate in our sports because it’s a fun time for socializing and fellowship,” Davis said. “Special Olympics also builds their skills and confidence, and it is an incredible way for them to make new friends and stay in touch with others in the program.”
