(MOSELEY, VA) – Magnolia Green Golf Club – managed by Billy Casper Golf – will host 72 of the state’s top young golfers for the 36-hole, Virginia High School League Group 5A-6A State Championship on Monday, October 12 and Tuesday, October 13.
Beginning at 8:30 a.m., men and women will play the par-72 layout from 6,309 and 5,360 yards, respectively. Crafted by Nicklaus Design in association with Tom Clark, the course is characterized by generous fairways and well-guarded greens. Among its memorable holes is the lengthy, reverse Redan-style par-3 No. 3 which requires a smart and accurate tee shot. The nerve-wrecking par-4 No. 18 provides a dramatic finish as golfers face a dangerous downhill approach to a heavily undulated green.
“This talented field is in for a stern test at Magnolia Green Golf Club,” says Bobby Kidder, General Manager of Magnolia Green Golf Club. “The course is in wonderful condition; club selection and distance control are crucial to scoring well here.”
Last year Mills E. Godwin High School (Henrico) posted a team-total 613 to narrowly edge Deep Run High School (Glen Allen) by two strokes for the 5A title while South County High School (Lorton) fired a 606 to win the 6A Championship.
Less than 25 miles southwest of the state capital, Magnolia Green Golf Club is the centerpiece of Magnolia Green, the region’s best-selling community. Formerly the 9-hole Westham Golf Club, it was recently expanded into a par-72, 7,150-yard course under the watchful eye of iStar. One of the U.S.’s leading developers of master-planned communities, iStar invested more than $3 million to build the new nine, making Magnolia Green only the second 18-hole course to open in Virginia since 2010.
