Upcoming golf movie showcases big names, strong industry support

(New York, NY) – Ancient Game Productions – led by acclaimed Golf in the Kingdom Executive Producer George Elias Stephanopoulos – announces its Greek-inspired sports comedy Swing Away, has moved into post-production.

An engaging comedy that features an ensemble Greek, British and American cast, Swing Away is a uniquely original coming of age story that sees professional golfer Zoe Papadopoulos (Shannon Elizabeth) suspended by the LPGA Tour after an outburst. To cope, she retreats to her grandparents’ village on the magical Greek island of Rhodes. There, Papadopoulos rekindles her love for the game while mentoring a village girl and inspiring the townspeople to save their local golf course from its greedy, devious owner and routinely rude American businessman, Glenn (John O’Hurley). The heartwarming comedy concludes with a climatic golf match as the entire town watches on.

“With present day Greece and golf as the backdrop, Swing Away uses humor to tackle a variety of universal themes,” says Stephanopoulos. “It’s a film that’s sure to resonate with those who love golf, its ups and downs and what the game can inspire in people.”

Key scenes from Swing Away were shot during the 2015 ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer. LPGA Tour player Nicole Castrale also served as a technical consultant to the producers, appeared in the film and spent time in Greece conducting grow-the-game initiatives.

“It’s crucial for us to develop new fans and players in those countries that don’t know much about golf,” says Castrale. “That’s how the LPGA will continue to grow its global fan base.”

Additional support came from Buffalo Brand Invigoration Group, which helped pair the Swing Away production team with golf industry partners like Volvik (golf balls, bag and headwear) and Antigua, which outfitted cast members.

“This is a wonderful story about golf and life that celebrates the global interest in the game,” adds Joe Steranka, Chief Global Strategist at Buffalo. “We look forward to announcing the site of this film’s world premiere in the coming months.”

Stephanopoulos noted “Swing Away” is scheduled for a spring 2016 release “to coincide with the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio, where golf will be a new Olympic sport and of course with Greece being the birthplace of the Olympics.”
