Texan Matt Cowan will return to defend GCSAA national title at Torrey Pines and Aviara
Lawrence, Kan. (Nov. 10, 2015) – The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) Golf Championships will be contested Feb. 6-8, 2016, in San Diego as part of the Golf Industry Show.
The championships, presented in partnership with The Toro Co. and benefiting the Environmental Institute for Golf (EIFG), will offer four different events over three days and will draw members of all abilities. The competitions will take place at six high-end courses in the San Diego area, including courses that host professional events for the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour – Torrey Pines South and North, and Aviara Golf Club, respectively.
In addition to the GCSAA National Championship Feb. 7-8, a four-ball competition will be held Feb. 6, followed by a shamble event on Feb. 7. The two-day Golf Classic is scheduled for Feb. 7-8, and will offer both a gross and net flighted competition that will use a point-quota scoring system. Flights in the Golf Classic will rotate between courses.
More than 400 GCSAA members participated in the 2015 combined championships, which raised $50,000 for the EIFG, with Matt Cowan of Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin, winning the weather-shortened 18-hole, stroke play National Championship at Cordillera Ranch Golf Club by three strokes with a 1-under-par 71 in difficult conditions. The National Championship is limited to 100 GCSAA members with a 5.0 handicap index or lower.
Other courses welcoming golfers over the three days of events are La Costa Resort, Maderas Golf Club and The Crossings at Carlsbad. Read more about the courses and competitions at www.golfindustryshow.com.
The PGA of America will provide Rules officials and course set-up. In addition, The Toro Co. will mark its 22nd year as the presenting partner of the GCSAA Golf Championships. The 2016 GCSAA Golf Championships will be held in conjunction with the Golf Industry Show, featuring the GCSAA education conference and the tradeshow Feb. 8-11 at the San Diego Convention Center in the downtown San Diego area.
