Old American Golf Club Achieves Top Honor In Golfweek Rankings

November 19, 2015

Tripp Davis-Justin Leonard design listed among ‘Next 100 Great’ residential courses

(THE COLONY, Texas) – Old American Golf Club – the Tripp Davis and Justin Leonard design located along the scenic shores of Lake Lewisville – achieved the “Residential: Next 100” honor from Golfweek Magazine in its annual listing of residential courses.

The ranking, which is featured in Golfweek’s Ultimate Guide to Golf Course Living and Great Escapes, 2016, places Old American among the top 200 residential courses in the U.S. The golf club, which pays homage to the “Golden Age” of golf course architecture (1911-1937), joins other prestigious residential courses in the “Residential: Next 100” rankings such as fellow Metroplex layouts The Vaquero Club and TPC Craig Ranch, Big Horn in Palm Desert, Calif., and Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The residential rankings originate from Golfweek’s annual compilation of America’s Best Courses, published since 1997. Raters throughout the country evaluate courses on the basis of 10 criteria, providing a final score calculated through a statistically rigorous process.

“It’s truly an honor to be recognized once again as one of the top residential courses in the country by Golfweek,” says Mike McCabe, General Manager at Old American Golf Club. “Our members and staff take great pride in the golf course, and The Tribute Lakeside Golf and Resort Community – with its superb home sites and family-friendly amenities – make our area one of the country’s best places to live and play.”

The golf club offers unique residential golf memberships, including a complimentary 30-day trial for new homeowners. Authentic rustic elements are prevalent throughout the golf club – such as a railroad bridge on the outward nine and a former dairy barn that serves as cart storage. Behind the barn sits an organic garden, which has inspired a leading edge culinary program and farm-to-table menu. Plots inside the garden are available to residents interested in growing their own crops.

About Old American Golf Club

Inspired by the “Golden Age” of golf course architecture between 1911 and 1937, Old American Golf Club’s natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes were influenced by such masterpieces as Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links, Prairie Dunes and Crystal Downs.

Acclaimed architect Tripp Davis, an accomplished amateur player and former All-American at the University of Oklahoma and PGA TOUR/Ryder Cup star Justin Leonard, who played golf at the University of Texas, toured and played a handful of America’s classic Golden Age golf courses prior to starting the design process for Old American.

The result is a golf course that emphasizes strategy and shot-making and flows with a natural rhythm from first tee to 18th green. Old American features six sets of tees, ranging from the 5,215-yard forward markers to the 7,174-yard “Leonard” tournament tees. Davis and Leonard conceived the routing and layout with both medal and match play in mind, as golfers are required to hold “steady to par” through a number of holes, but enticed to gamble on birdie or better during select stretches of the course.
