Program to highlight water dependency, sustainability

(RIO VERDE, Ariz.) – Rio Verde Community and Country Club – the award-winning residential enclave northeast of Scottsdale – will host the “It’s All About Water” conference and symposium January 30.

The program, which emphasizes sustainable approaches to the use, conservation and preservation of water, runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Rio Verde’s community center. The roster of speakers is highlighted by keynoter Joanna Nadeau of Audubon International and Mike Kleminski, General Manager of Rio Verde Utilities, and also includes Donna DiFrancesco, a conservation specialist with the City of Mesa, and Noelle Johnson, a landscape consultant and horticulturalist.

They will focus on indoor and outdoor practical water use policies, critical water supply issues, as well as the use of portable exchange water softening units. A number of vendors and exhibits – from local water conservation specialists, to sellers of advanced solar hot water heating and portable exchange units – will dot the community center floor and parking area. Water saving devices and technologies will also be on display.

“Our goal with the ‘It’s All About Water’ conference and symposium is to stress the importance of our most vital natural resource and spotlight sustainable practices impacting our community,” says Gary Holcomb, President of the Rio Verde Community Association. “We are grateful for the extraordinary lineup of topical speakers, vendors and exhibitors presenting at this important event.”

In April 2015, Rio Verde was designated a Certified Sustainable Community by Audubon International. The community achieved the designation by developing and implementing management practices and policies according to a community-driven Long Term Sustainability Plan (LTSP).

The LTSP included timelines and measurable goals addressing 15 focus areas, including wildlife conservation and habitat enhancement, water conservation, energy efficiency, health and transportation. Receiving designation as an Audubon International Certified Sustainable Community was contingent upon the quality and completeness of the LTSP and its implementation.

Boasting 735 acres of desert wildflowers, cacti and abundant wildlife that accent its residential areas and amenities, Rio Verde became the first Certified Sustainable Community west of the Mississippi River and the fifth overall in the United States.
