Fresno Golf Pro Steve Menchinella Goes Birdie Hunting, Hits Ace

February 19, 2016

FRESNO, Calif. – Steve Menchinella may be retired, but his game is far from declining. The Sunnyside Director of Golf Emeritus proved that yesterday when he scored a birdie, eagle, and hole-in-one on three consecutive holes at Airways Golf Course.

Taking advantage of the balmy summer-like weather, Menchinella toured the course in two under par 67. The remarkable round started with 3 pars and a bogey followed by back-to-back eagles, and finished with a two under par-8 under Steve’s age, which is pretty remarkable in its own right. Fellow PGA Professional Tom James was there to witness the feat. “It was by far the neatest thing I’ve seen on the course,” said James, “I think you’d have better odds at winning the Powerball.”

Known as “The Godfather of Northern California Golf”, Menchinella first picked up a golf club as a junior at Lincoln Golf Course just east of Sacramento. It was there that he developed a love of the game that grew to span more than 40 years of dedication to the betterment of golf in the area. He has won many prestigious awards, including the 1998 Northern California Professional of the Year, the 1999 Northern California Award for Lifetime Achievement, the 2004 Golf Writers Golden State Award, the 2009 PGA Langley Award for contributions to the game of golf, and he was inducted into the Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.
