(RESTON, VA) – Oglebay Resort and Conference Center – the historic, year-round 1,700-acre recreational park in the West Virginia foothills of the Appalachian Mountains – has selected Buffalo Brand Invigoration Group (Buffalo) to provide golf-focused public relations.
Buffalo BIG will create and execute a communications plan to raise overall awareness of Oglebay, emphasizing its rich golf history, diversity of courses and signature service standards. Media coverage nationally and in regional feeder markets will drive brand identity, golf rounds and room nights.
“Our resort and conference center has a compelling legacy and exciting future intrinsically tied to the great game of golf,” says Rodney Haley, Executive Vice President of Operations for Oglebay. “We are excited for the Buffalo BIG team to publicize our golf courses, stay-and-play packages and innovative programming.”
Three 18-hole layouts present a compelling mix of classic and modern styles. The Speidel Golf Club houses two championship tracts – the Jones Course (Robert Trent Jones, Sr.) and the (Arnold) Palmer Course. The resort’s original course – the Crispin – opened in 1950 and at just over 5,600 yards is ideal for warm-up rounds, women, seniors and beginners. Oglebay also offers a driving range, and a sporty par-3 course at Wheeling Park.
“Oglebay epitomizes affordable, playable and accessible golf in a beautiful, natural setting,” says Shane Sharp, Vice President of Buffalo BIG. “With more than 500,000 golfers living within a three-hour drive, Oglebay is poised to be even better known as a ‘go-to’ golf and recreational destination.”

About Oglebay Resort and Conference Center
Situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Wheeling, W.V., Oglebay Resort and Conference Center offers exceptional overnight accommodations, world-class amenities and 1,700 acres of year-round recreational opportunities. Swimming, tennis, horse stables, miniature golf, fishing, miles of paved walking/jogging trails, shopping, sightseeing, and visiting the West Spa and 30-acre Good Zoo are among the numerous activities onsite.
Once the estate of Earl W. Oglebay, the resort and conference center land dates back to the late 1700s. Upon his death in 1926, Oglebay willed his property to the people of Wheeling for as long as “they operate it as a place for public recreation.” Today it is the only self-supporting public municipal resort in operation. Funded mainly through its resort operations, Oglebay Park has more free activities than many facilities of its type in the country.
Oglebay is best known for golf as the resort presents four courses, including two championship layouts at the Speidel Golf Club. The par-71 Arnold Palmer design is a modern links layout that takes advantage of the rolling terrain with strategically-placed bunkers, contemporary mounding and ample-size greens. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the Jones Course is draped over the hills and dales of a former dairy farm, and hosted the West Virginia LPGA Classic for 11 years.
The resort also features the 18-hole regulation Crispin Course – Oglebay’s original layout – and a nine-hole, par-3 course. A full-service practice range and short-game area at Speidel offers warm-up and game-improvement opportunities.
Accommodations include the inviting, 270-room Wilson Lodge, quaint cottages and spacious estate houses. With over 20,000 square feet of meeting space spread over 15 rooms, Oglebay offers all the amenities to meet today’s business demands, and provides an ideal setting for training programs and corporate retreats.
