Current PGA star Rickie Fowler won Championship in 2006
PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C., March 21, 2016 – One of the most distinguished high school golf tournaments, the Palmetto High School Golf Championship, returns to Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club on March 24-26. In its 18th year of existence, the Palmetto High School Golf Championship features notable alum, 2006 champion and current PGA Tour player Rickie Fowler, and PGA Tour player Harris English.
This year, 40 high school teams from around the country and Canada are slated to compete in the event.
The tournament is conducted as a 54-hole team stroke play championship. Teams consist of five players, with the four low scores determining the team total. The first day of competition will serve as a qualifying round with teams being broken into two flights of 20 teams. On days two and three, teams will compete for awards within their flight using their total 36-hole gross team score from rounds two and three.
“We are very excited to host the Palmetto High School Golf Championship this year,” said Bob Seganti, PGA director of golf operations for Caledonia Golf and Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club. “This tournament is one of the most prestigious prep championships in the country. We will likely see future stars of the PGA Tour playing, so it will be a great weekend.”
Last year, Durham Academy (Durham, N.C.) took home the title. Edmond North High School (Edmond, Okla.) and Jesuit High School (New Orleans, La.) rounded out the top three. All three schools return in 2016, along with schools from Canada, California, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas .
