(HILTON HEAD, S.C.) – The Sea Pines Resort – Hilton Head’s flagship luxury destination and host venue of the PGA TOUR’s RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing – announces its Vice President of Sports & Operations, Cary Corbitt, has been named to the Lowcountry Golf Hall of Fame.
Corbitt began his career at The Sea Pines Resort in 1977 as a staff professional and then head professional at Sea Pines Plantation GC. He later became director of golf for the resort’s three courses. For the past 25 years, he has supervised Sea Pines’ sports and operations. He will be honored along with Karen Ferrer, a winner of 17 state or Carolina amateur titles, in a dinner awards ceremony at Hampton Hall on April 2.
During his tenure, the RBC Heritage played on Harbour Town Golf Links has become one of the favorite stops for PGA TOUR players and fans. Corbitt oversaw a series of enhancements last summer to the seminal Pete Dye / Jack Nicklaus design including a comprehensive regrassing of the tee-boxes, fairways and rough as well as installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system.
In 2014, Corbitt brought in designer Pete Dye for a series of subtle modifications to the resort’s Heron Point course making it more “player friendly.” Heron Point was recently named “Golf Course of the Year” by the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association.
Corbitt also was instrumental in bringing in Love Golf Design, the course architecture firm of PGA TOUR star Davis Love III and his brother Mark, for a total makeover of the Ocean Course which will reopen later this year.
Throughout his career, Corbitt has repeatedly shown a strong desire and commitment to be actively involved in the Hilton Head community, local golf industry with the PGA of America, and the Golf Course Owners Association.
“Being in the golf business is all I ever wanted to do and I was fortunate to be given the opportunity of such an awesome career here at Sea Pines,” says Corbitt. “The rebuilding of our three courses has been extremely satisfying as we’re now positioned to continue to remain at the pinnacle of premier golf destinations.”
