(NOBLESVILLE, IN) – Purgatory Golf Club has been named one of the “Top 20 Courses in Indiana” by GolfAdvisor, the trusted home of more than 200,000 reviews and recommendations for golfers by golfers.
The family-owned, links-style layout 40 minutes north of Indianapolis ranked No. 6 of more than 500 eligible courses with 4.5 (of five) stars. To determine its top-20 list, GolfAdvisor weighed user-based reviews measuring courses’ overall design, conditioning, customer service and affordability.
“We treat golfers to experiences they can’t find anywhere else in Indiana,” says Brian Rhodes, General Manager of Purgatory Golf Club. “Multiple tee boxes and undulated greens present new challenges every time guests tee it up; furthermore, it’s not often you get to play a course blessed by a priest.”
Under Billy Casper Golf management since April of 2014, Purgatory’s award-winning, 7,754-yard layout was designed by local architect Ron Kern. Guests quickly appreciate his thoughtful routing that optimizes entertainment for players of all abilities by encouraging creativity and shot making.
Spread across 218-acres of breathtaking landscape, more than 125 crushed, limestone bunkers and tall native grasses lining fairways make for unforgettable rounds. Among the signature holes is the mid-length par-3 17th, dubbed “Hell’s Half Acre” that requires an accurate approach to avoid two acres of bunkers guarding the green.
“Considerable thought and care went into designing Purgatory Golf Club,” says Mike Merchent, club co-owner with wife, Tenna. “Our biggest challenge and opportunity is pleasing guests, and we are honored GolfAdvisor reviewers recognize our personable service standards and spectacular course layout and conditions.”
The GolfAdvisor honor follows Purgatory being named the “Indiana Golf Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association and ranking among Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.”.
Three of many rave reviews by GolfAdvisor users:
• “My home state has very few public layouts that are memorable, but Purgatory is one that will resonate for a long time.”
• “Staff is there to take care of you and goes above and beyond. We were greeted with a cart within five minutes. Exceptional course and unusually great service. Play this course!”
• “The clubhouse is magnificent and the course is a one-of-a-kind. The course is in pristine condition and the new touch screen GPS is awesome … everything at this club is first class.”
Purgatory’s world-class practice facility features a 7,000 square-foot putting green, 10,000 square-foot chipping area and expansive driving range. The inviting clubhouse showcases hand-crafted furniture, “The Confessional” bar and a banquet hall that accommodates 225 guests.
