Timacuan Golf And Country Club Selected To Host U.S. Open Qualifier

May 4, 2016

LAKE MARY, FL – For the sixth time in seven years, Timacuan Golf And Country Club will host a U.S. Open Local Qualifying Tournament.

A strong field of 84 players will tee it up for five spots in the May 12 qualifier, with the hope of eventually making it to the U.S. Open in June at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Nationwide nearly 10,000 players are attempting to qualify for the national championship.

Several professional tour players will be in the Timacuan field, along with highly ranked juniors and former Golf Channel Big Break winners. Among them is Patrick Sheehan, who has earned over $5 million during his PGA Tour and Web.Com Tour career. Jahred Hack of Sanford, who has full status on the Web.Com Tour, will be competing as well.

Also in the field is former PGA National Champion and two-time PGA Player of the Year Rod Perry, and a pair of Big Break participants, Willie Mack and Jimmy Brandt, who won Big Break in 2015. Mack and Brandt have had luck at this golf course, as both have won the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble held every January.

Another entrant who has enjoyed success at Timacuan is Andy Zhang from China. He shot a nine-under-par 63 during a Moonlight Tour tournament at Timacuan two weeks ago. Zhang qualified for and competed in the U.S. Open at the age of 14.

Other top names in the field include: Shun Yat Hak, former No. 1-ranked junior player in the world, Eugene Hong, currently the No.10-ranked junior worldwide, and Bobby Bai, Tommy Cao and Robin Wang, students at Timacuan’s EaglesDream Golf Academy.

Timacuan has hosted dozens of tournaments of national scope over the years, including the annual $10,000 Timacuan Scramble every January, and most of golf’s professional mini tours. Also, many of the world’s leading juniors have competed in tournaments on the Ron Garl design.

“Timacuan has become the most popular tournament venue in Central Florida in recent years,” said Nate Stevenson, Director of Golf Operations. “With events such as next week’s U.S. Open qualifier and the numerous national and regional junior championships held at Timacuan, we have worked hard to establish our facility as the best championship venue in central Florida that everyone can come out and enjoy.”

There are many reasons why golf’s governing bodies often choose Timacuan to host their tournaments.

Timacuan has received rave reviews from the many PGA and LPGA Tour players who have competed in the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble during PGA Merchandise Show week each January.

“I really enjoyed the golf course,” said Graeme McDowell, the Irishman who won the U.S. Open in 2010. “It is a great layout with a links-like feel to it. It can be testy in places if you get off the beaten path, but it is a very fair course. And it is in great condition.”

Said LPGA Tour star Brittany Lincicome, “This is a terrific golf course. It is a good test of golf. You have to be able to move the ball around to be successful here.”

Timacuan features two distinctly different nines. The front nine has a Scottish feel, with open fairways, mounding, sprawling bunkers and large greens. The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel featuring stately oaks, tall pines, and several water hazards that demand precision off the tee and to the green.
