ORLANDO, Fla. (May 6, 2016) åÂ- Golfweek is keeping a close eye on the race to the Haskins and ANNIKA Awards with its weekly watch lists. The Haskins Award presented by Stifel and the ANNIKA Award presented by 3M is given annually to the best male and female collegiate golfers, respectively, and Golfweek will track the top contenders for both honors leading up to the June 7 presentation of the awards at the conclusion of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Championships.
Golfweek’s weekly Haskins and ANNIKA watch lists are generated using the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, a rating system that combines win-lose-tie records and stroke differentials to determine how well players have been performing throughout the fall and spring seasons. Along with each list, Golfweek college golf experts provide a rundown of the highlights from the previous week, analyzing any notable wins or losses that may have affected the standings. Voting for the awards will be open to players, coaches and golf media, with the ANNIKA Award voting starting on May 8, and the Haskins Award voting beginning May 19.
“The recognition that comes along with winning these awards is paramount to a young golfer’s career,” said Golfweek Editor Steve Harmon. “Golfweek has always been dedicated to covering every level of the game, and we especially love watching collegians rise through the ranks, from winning one of these awards to winning golf’s biggest majors. It’s really incredible.”
Regarded as the “Heisman Trophy of golf,” the Haskins Award is a true mark of excellence for collegiate male players, and this year’s recipient will join an illustrious list of past winners, including three-time winners Ben Crenshaw and Phil Mickelson and future major champions Tiger Woods, Justin Leonard and David Duval. The 2016 winner will also receive an exemption to compete in The Greenbrier Classic on the PGA Tour.
Though only in its third year, the ANNIKA Award has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious honors for female college golfers. Besides bragging rights and the clear golf résumé boost, the award also associates recipients with its namesake Annika Sorenstam, one of the most influential female golfers of all time.
