AYRSHIRE, Scotland (May 17, 2016) – Golphin Ltd. (www.golphin.com), an award-winning Scottish-based company which designs and manufactures specialized golf equipment for children, announces its Bronze Partnership with the South Central Section PGA. Golphin equipment will be used for junior golf instruction within the Section.
“We are delighted to partner with the South Central Section PGA,” said Calum McPherson, founder and managing director of Golphin, “as our goal is to inspire children towards a lifetime of playing golf. Kids need to have fun when playing any game, and making golf enjoyable with a feeling of success from the very beginning is essential.
“Availing PGA professionals of our coaching packs is making that happen. Attracting children and sustaining their interest is a huge challenge, and Golphin’s easy-to-swing clubs are beginning to break down those barriers.”
Golphin is being recognized as the leading innovator in the junior golf space. The recent Golf Digest award as 2016 Best Beginners Junior Clubs adds to Golphin’s other successes, including the 2015 HSBC/IMG Global Innovation Award and the Scottish Sporting Chance Best New Product Award.
The South Central Section PGA, which includes the entire state of Arkansas and a part of Kansas, as well as Oklahoma, was formed in 1959. It previously had included portions of six states. The South Central Section PGA is one of 41 geographic Sections that make up the PGA of America. Approximately 382 Members and 74 Apprentices strive to promote the enjoyment and growth of the game of golf in the South Central region.
Brian Davis, PGA, executive director of the South Central PGA Section, said, “The South Central PGA is excited to work with Golphin and provide these state-of-the-art lightweight clubs to children throughout our growth-of-the-game programming. We are especially excited to start using these clubs with our local YMCAs as they graduate kids onto the golf course for the first time.
“We believe by providing youngsters with Golphin clubs, we will offer them a positive first experience on the golf course that will lead to a lifetime of playing golf.”
Golphin also has partnered with the Mid Atlantic Section PGA, LPGA T&CP, TPI and IMG, and is the exclusive partner to The R&A for The Open Championship PGA Swingzone coaching events.
About Golphin
Golphin, founded in 2014 in Scotland, the Home of Golf, was inspired by Calum McPherson having observed his son’s difficulty playing golf with cut-down clubs and having set a goal to make golf more enjoyable for juniors. Research and development in 2012 led to the design of prototype equipment in 2013, and Golphin was launched officially in 2014 at the Scottish Golf Show.
Golphin clubs, designed to benefit children ages three through 12, were developed in partnership with PGA Professionals and the biomechanical department at Strathclyde University, in Glasgow, using technology transfer from the aerospace industry. They are 22% lighter and 35% larger than most junior golf clubs, making it easier for players to swing, control and hit. A radial profile was added to the sole of the clubs to provide greater forgiveness for differing lie angles and to accommodate children’s various address positions and heights.
The GFK line of Golphin product selections is based on the height of each individual child. GFK 324 clubs are for children 39-43″ tall; GFK 526 clubs are for children 43-47″ tall; GFK 728 clubs are for children 47-51″ tall; GFK910 clubs are for children 51-55″ tall; and GFK1112 clubs are for children 55-59″ tall.
The Golphin Coaches Pack, designed for teaching professionals to provide equipment for potential new golfers at clinics and lessons, consists of 14 clubs: four high-loft drivers, six 7 irons, two “Swedgers” and two putters – including several left-handed clubs. Individual GFK sets include one driver, one 7 iron, one “Swedger” and one putter.
Recognized for its outstanding concept and designs, Golphin won two prestigious awards in 2015: the inaugural Scottish Sports Business Innovation Awards, presented in March in Glasgow, Scotland; and the 2015 HSBC Golf Innovation Award, presented at the HSBC Golf Business Forum in November in Shanghai, China. Also, Golphin was selected by the R&A for inclusion in its Swingzone area at the 2015 Open Championship, played at the Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland.
Duncan Weir, director of golf development for the R&A, said, “The high quality and versatility of the Golphin GFK range is very impressive. It is certainly well geared for getting youngsters into golf and helping to address the undoubted participation issues the sport is currently facing.”
