Calm, Steady Play Lifts Wood To Victory At BMW PGA Championship

New Mizuno promotion will extend celebration with giveaways to fans

Norcross, Ga. (June 2, 2016) – Buoyed by a record-setting front nine, Mizuno brand ambassador Chris Wood captured his third career European Tour title with a victory at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club over the weekend.

To celebrate Wood’s victory, Mizuno is encouraging fans to send him a congratulatory note using the hashtag #MizunoChampion on Facebook and Twitter and for a chance to win a host of prizes, beginning with the clubs Wood used to win the BMW PGA Championship – the JPX EZ 3-wood and T-5 wedges.

Wood began the final round three shots behind but he quickly closed the gap. He opened with a six-under-par 29, setting the record for the low score on the front nine, and built a four-shot lead through 11 holes. However, three bogeys in a four-hole stretch forced Wood to make par on the final hole.

Rather than be aggressive and go for the green in two on the par-five No. 18, Wood cautiously laid up, hitting a pair of wedge shots with the T-5 to the green. He then two-putted comfortably from 20 feet for the victory.

“It’s the biggest win of my career so far,” said Wood. “I have always wanted to win (the BMW PGA Championship) and to bring this title home with my family here with me is amazing.”

With the victory, Wood has solidified his positioning for a spot on the European Ryder Cup team, rising to the third spot in the European ranking and trailing only Masters champion Danny Willett and World No. 3 Rory McIlroy. He also moved into the Top Five on the European Tour’s Order of Merit and cracked the Top 25 in the world rankings.

Armed with a collection of Mizuno clubs, Wood was able to tame the challenging Wentworth. He relied on his MP-25 3-iron, while employing the MP-5 at strategic points throughout the tournament. Also in his bag were the T-5 wedge in 52-, 56- and 60-degree loft options, as well as the Mizuno JPX EZ for his 3-wood.

“Chris is one of the top young golfers on the tour, and he’s a tremendous ambassador for Mizuno,” said Mike Puccini, senior director, brand management at Mizuno. “To see him having such success while moving closer to a spot on the Ryder Cup team is rewarding for all of us in the Mizuno family. We’re confident this is just one in a long line of victories to come for Chris, and we’re proud to be partners with him on his journey.”
