Half-Hour Program On Fox Sports Detroit Television Urges Golfers To Know The Game’s Unsung Heroes

Michigan Golf Live host Bill Hobson highlights the members and work of Michigan Golf Course Superintendents Association.

Lawrence, Kan. (June 21, 2016) – More than 250,000 golfers in Michigan have the chance to watch and learn more about golf course superintendents and the jobs they do to provide the best possible playing conditions through a half-hour show on “Michigan Golf Live” this summer.

Hosted by Bill Hobson and airing on Fox Sports Detroit, the show is a bit different from other golf shows on the network that showcase one specific course in the region. Instead, Hobson said, “this show features the unsung heroes who help make a golfer’s day at the golf course more enjoyable.”

Fox Sports Detroit is available on cable television throughout Michigan, as well as in northeastern Indiana, northwest Ohio and some portions of northeastern Wisconsin. It is also available nationwide on DirectTV and the Dish Network.

Funding for the program was provided jointly by the Michigan Golf Course Superintendents Association (MiGCSA) and the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). The project was initiated by Jay Eccleton, a certified golf course superintendent and director of golf course operations at The Emerald Golf Course in Saint Johns, Mich., with the support of Adam Ikamas, MiGCSA executive director and its board of directors.

“The show serves members and non-members alike, said Ikamas, who represents the largest single state chapter of the 98 GCSAA affiliated chapters. “We always thought there was an opportunity for us to do a show. This show was years in the making. It premiered May 21 (2016) and has replayed several times, including some times when Fox Sports has time to fill or during a Detroit Tigers rain delay.”

Other certified golf course superintendents featured along with Ikamas and Eccleton are past MiGCSA President Jeff Holmes of Egypt Valley Country Club; current MiGCSA President Justin Bickel of The Nightmare; The Dream and West Branch Country Club; John Fulling of Kalamazoo Country Club; Rob Steger of Saginaw Country Club, and Jeff Sweet of Bucks Run Golf Club.

“We have had many positive comments from our members and golfers on how this turned out,” said Ikamas, who oversees a membership of more than 750. “It’s a great way to connect and educate golfers all around the state.
