LAKE MARY, FL (July 18, 2016) – PGA Professional Rick Smith, a golf industry veteran in the Orlando area, has been named Director of Golf at Timacuan Golf & Country Club.
Smith, a native of Kentucky, will oversee all aspects of the golf operation.
“I am looking forward to new and exciting challenges in the golf industry and being able to deliver a great product here at Timacuan Golf & Country Club,” said Smith. “Timacuan has the reputation of being a great tournament golf course and a popular course for members and recreational golfers. I am glad to be here and hope to build on that reputation.”
Smith comes to Timacuan from the Kissimmee area, where he oversaw both Remington Golf Club and Kissimmee Bay Country Club as the Director of Golf. His responsibilities included golf operations, contracting tournaments and events, overseeing member events and ordering all products for two fully stocked pro shops.
Smith has worked at two other golf courses in Central Florida. He spent three years at Tuscawilla Country Club in Winter Springs before moving to Mystic Dunes Golf Club near Disney World. He spent the majority of his 14 years at Mystic Dunes as Director Of Golf, managing the golf sales department, banquets and catering, golf course maintenance and the onsite golf academy. He also was responsible for purchasing all hard goods and soft goods for the pro shop, which won “Top 100 Golf Shops in North America” in 2013.
Smith and wife Veronica, who live in Winter Springs, were married in 2002 and together have six children.
There are many reasons why golf’s governing bodies often choose Timacuan to host their tournaments. Timacuan has received rave reviews from the many PGA and LPGA Tour players who have competed in the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble during PGA Merchandise Show week each January.
“I really enjoyed the golf course,” said Graeme McDowell, the Irishman who won the U.S. Open in 2010. “It is a great layout with a links-like feel to it. It can be testy in places if you get off the beaten path, but it is a very fair course. And it is in great condition.”
Said LPGA Tour star Brittany Lincicome, “This is a terrific golf course. It is a good test of golf. You have to be able to move the ball around to be successful here.”
Timacuan features two distinctly different nines. The front nine has a Scottish feel, with open fairways, mounding, sprawling bunkers and large greens. The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel featuring stately oaks, tall pines, and several water hazards that demand precision off the tee and to the green.
