Wilmore, Ky – Golf legend and acclaimed course designer Jack Nicklaus recently visited the site of his future Signature Golf Course, Legacy Point, located in the City of Wilmore outside of Lexington, Ky. The Golden Bear, joined by members of his Nicklaus Design team, visited the site in early July to walk and ride the property several times in order to finalize a routing plan. A routing plan is a critical step in the design and development process, as it shows where the golf holes will eventually play across the property, as well as the course’s relationship to the housing and other amenities.
During his trip, Jack raved to the developers of Legacy Point about the beautifully rolling terrain and natural features of the property, and expressed his excitement about the latest routing plan for the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. The development presents an opportunity to design a championship course, but one very playable at all levels, and, most important, a course that will be low impact to the environment and even enhance it most places.
“After seeing the property, I think we’ve got the opportunity to create something very special,” Nicklaus said. “It was important to the development partners for us to finalize a routing that not only works for the golf course, but also works for the property, the residential and the other amenities. I think we accomplished that. And in doing so, I think we minimized the impact on the natural vegetation and the amount of earth that needs to be moved.”
The goal for this site visit was to provide feedback to the developers for the layout of the golf course and related residential units. The developers will then take this information and work with their land-planners in order to create a unique, cohesive relationship between the golf and the surrounding residential units.
On hand for the site visit were prominent members of the City of Wilmore, Nicholasville and Jessamine County. Byron Holley, one of the development partners for Legacy Point, said the collective vision for the development was one of unity and synergy with the community, and a highlight of the Nicklaus visit was the ability to share some valuable time and collective vision between the Golden Bear and the community leaders.
“Our vision is to create a wonderful showplace through a sustainable design that embraces the environment; our members, services and amenities; and especially the surrounding community,” Holley said. “Legacy Point will be about great golf and a whole lot more – it will become a way of life!”
