Orlando, Fla. (July 21, 2016) – Ron Philo, an accomplished competitor and the top-ranked golf teacher in Vermont, has been named an instructor for Golf Channel Academy.
The Director of Golf & Club Operations for Stowe Mountain Resort in Stowe, Vt., Philo is among the game’s most influential and recognizable teachers who have established a dedicated network of instruction facilities with the active support of Golf Channel, the game’s leading global multimedia and golf entertainment source.
“I’m very excited to be among these dynamic coaches associated with the Golf Channel Academy,” said Philo, who will oversee the new Golf Channel Academy at Stowe Mountain Resort. “This is a chance for golf coaches to work together, learning from one another and adopting best practices in both coaching, to better serve the golfing public. My goal is to help our clients learn to play, play better and enjoy playing golf more.”
Launched in April 2015, Golf Channel Academy is the first network of its kind devoted to efficiently growing the business of golf instruction. With 68 locations, Golf Channel Academy will be inviting additional coaches to become part of the network as it continues to grow.
A golf teacher for 20 years, Philo comes from one of golf’s leading families. His sister, veteran LPGA Tour player Laura Diaz, won two LPGA titles in 2002 and competed in four Solheim Cups for the United States. His father, Ron Sr., has been a PGA member for more than 40 years and continues to teach at Stowe Mountain Resort through the summer months. Philo’s uncle and grandfather were also PGA professionals.
Philo was selected as the “Best Teacher” in the state of Vermont by Golf Digest magazine (for 2015-2016) and New England Golf Journal. He was also recognized as the 2010 New England Section PGA Teacher of the Year.
Philo has developed what he refers to as a “philo-sophy” for improving at golf. It centers on his concept that golf is a target sport. The player needs to develop a motion that allows them to effectively react to the target. He believes the motion needs to be simple and built around the physical abilities of the player.
An accomplished player, Philo captured the 2006 PGA Professional National Championship and is a five-time PGA Section Player of the Year and four-time PGA Section champion.
Following in the family’s footsteps, Philo has competed in eight major championships overall, including one U.S. Open, and more than a dozen events on the PGA Tour. His uncle Dave Philo competed in two PGA Championships and his father one.
In 2005, Philo made the cut at the PGA Championship with sister Laura on his bag. Laura has competed in all of the women’s major championships
