Angels Camp, CA (August 1, 2016) – Timing is a key factor to an exceptional golf swing. But clearly not as vital as it would be to saving a life during a round of golf! With customer safety always a prime consideration, Greenhorn Creek Resort, located in California’s gold country, launched of a comprehensive program for treating cardiac arrest known as the Greenhorn Emergency Medical System (GEMS).
Each year, of the estimated 350,000 deaths in the United States due to sudden cardiac arrest, 3,000 occur on a golf course. Seventy to eighty percent of these casualties can be avoided if CPR is administered within four minutes and if an AED is used within the first nine minutes after a cardiac arrest.
To safeguard against such incidents at Greenhorn Creek, two forward-thinking members, Dr. Don St. Claire, a retired cardiologist and Dr. John Maurer, a retired psychiatrist, conceived the GEMS program in 2009, to provide free on-site training and retraining for the resort staff and members to perform CPR and operate an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Fortunately, a real-life scenario has yet to happen.
“I know many golf courses have AEDs but our program is unique given the number of people (over 300) I’ve trained and also that every hole has a GPS designation to the tee box, fairway and green and is connected to the local paramedics and fire department programs to alert them of the exact patient location without having to communicate with the pro shop,” says Dr. St. Claire. “We have at least two “dry runs” each year and have had an AED to the patient within 5-7 minutes and paramedics arriving in 8-10 minutes.”
Greenhorn Creek has stationed five AEDs throughout the property including one in each of the two women’s restrooms accessible by a code known to everyone who has taken the training, plus one in each of the two marshal’s carts and one in Camp’s Restaurant. In addition, a “hot line” is in place to respond to cell phone calls from the course.
