Charity tournament benefits young cancer patient
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC — (August 4, 2016) – The Fourth Annual Mount Pleasant Charity Pro/Am Open, presented by Southern Eagle Distributing, at Patriots Point Links on Charleston Harbor is set for Friday, September 2, through Sunday, September 4. As in previous years, the tournament will raise money to assist cancer patients, particularly those in the Charleston area with connections to Patriots Point.
In the past three years, the Pro/Am has raised more than $10,000 for area cancer patients and the American Cancer Society. This year’s three-day tournament will benefit 6-year-old Elia Solomon, who has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma. The fund-raising goal for 2016 is $5,000.
“We started this tournament to benefit the community and establish a competitive Pro/Am tournament in this area,” says Brad Parker, PGA, general manager of Patriots Point. “It’s a fun event that’s also competitive and it’s for a great cause, so we urge people to come out and enjoy this event.”
In addition to the funds raised to assist cancer patients, the tournament has paid out more than $15,000 in prizes to players. Winners from the past three years are Jon McDonald in 2013, Ross Thomson in 2014, and Austin Cody in 2015.
Three divisions of play are offered: Championship Division for professionals and amateurs, Open Division for amateurs, and Senior Division for players ages 55 and up. All players will play 54 holes of golf over the three-day tournament.
The cost is $200 per player for three days of competition, cart and greens fees, food and beverages. Each participant will also receive a player’s tee gift. Southern Eagle Distributing is a major sponsor of this year’s Mount Pleasant Charity Pro/Am Open.
Patriots Point Links on Charleston Harbor was founded in 1979. The par-72 course, designed by William Byrd, is located on the Charleston Harbor. The club’s 17th hole, an island green with sweeping views of Fort Sumter, Shem Creek and the historic Charleston downtown skyline, has been repeatedly named “Best Par 3 in the Lowcountry.” The course was also rated “South Carolina Course of the Year” for 2001 by the National Golf Course Owners Association.
