This is no doomsday spiel. It is a fact. Golf courses are closing at an unprecedented rate, especially in the developed world.
In North America, more golf courses closed than opened in the 2013 for the eighth straight year, according to the National Golf Foundation.
Since 2006, course closings have outnumbered openings after more than 4,500 courses had opened over the previous 15 years. Those courses, many of which were built as part of real estate projects, shut down. Golf club memberships and rounds played have also steadily declined. Do we need to go on?
Asia is no different and by the end of this decade, expect closures in a number of Asian countries. This should not come as a surprise because the era of “build and they will come” is over!
Golf has entered a very competitive age – an age that offers so much of recreational, leisure and fun options. Everything is about instant gratification. So, what do we do? Certainly dropping our heads in despair and adopting a negative mind-set is not the alternative. We, as an industry need to act collectively and with gusto!
It’s not a dead-end! There are amongst us, clubs that have found a way to stay relevant and produce good results. A HUGE re-think is in order. We need to provide more than just golf.
We need to provide an EXPERIENCE. We need to embark on serious MARKETING.
We are in the entertainment business so let’s buck up big time on SERVICE. Let’s reach out to younger GENERATIONS. Therein lie the answers.
The answers are all about Experience, Marketing, Service and Reaching Out!
